Liverpool Seek First Win at Portman Road with Barcola in Focus

Portman Road gets the Friday night spotlight and a reminder of how quickly the Premier League can test you. Newly promoted Ipswich, bright and fearless so far, welcome a Liverpool side still searching for their first victory under Andoni Iraola.

Two games, two draws, plenty of questions.

Liverpool’s new era still stuck in neutral

Liverpool arrive in Suffolk unbeaten but unsatisfied. A pair of 2-2 draws – away at Newcastle and at home to Nottingham Forest – have underlined both their resilience and their rough edges under Iraola.

The Spaniard is yet to fully stamp his identity on this squad. The intensity is there in flashes, the structure less so. Tonight feels like a chance to change that narrative.

He does at least have a new headline act. Bradley Barcola, signed from Paris Saint-Germain for a staggering £123m on the penultimate day of the window, is available for his debut. The French winger has not played a single pre-season minute, but he has trained fully with his new teammates this week. Iraola has hinted at caution; the bench looks the likeliest starting point.

Even without him, Liverpool’s XI is loaded. Alisson starts in goal behind a back four of Jacquet, Araujo, Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai form the midfield base, with Munoz, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo operating behind Alexander Isak up front.

The absentees tell their own story. Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with an Achilles problem, while Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley miss out through knee injuries. Joe Gomez is unavailable due to a muscle issue and Federico Chiesa has a minor back complaint. Depth is being tested early.

Ipswich’s fearless return

Ipswich, one place above Liverpool in the table, have already shown they are not here just to make up the numbers. The Tractor Boys opened with a 2-1 win over Sunderland on their Premier League return, then went to Old Trafford and dared to lead before being overrun 5-2 by Manchester United.

The scoreline stung. The performance did not. Julio Enciso and Abdul Fatawu have given Ipswich real edge in attack, the kind of direct threat that can turn Portman Road into a hostile, awkward venue for any visitor.

Gary O’Neil’s side line up with Scherpen in goal, behind a defence of Dara O’Shea, Issa Diop, Jacob Greaves and Leif Davis. In midfield, Palacios and Sasa Lukic anchor the side, with Fatawu, Enciso and Daizen Maeda supporting striker Emersonn.

They are not at full strength. Jaden Philogene-Bidace is out with an ankle injury, while Azor Matusiwa (muscle), Jack Taylor (knee) and Florentino Luis (doubt) leave O’Neil juggling his options. Emersonn has also been carrying a knee issue but is named to start.

Even so, Ipswich have already shown they can punch up. They will not sit quietly and admire the visitors.

Spotlight on Barcola

All eyes, though, keep drifting back to the Liverpool bench. Barcola is the statement signing of Iraola’s first summer, the player Liverpool chased all window before finally prising him from PSG for nine figures.

Iraola has been clear: Barcola is fit, just short of match rhythm after going without minutes since the World Cup. Three training sessions with Liverpool have at least given manager and player a glimpse of how this might work.

Whether he features for 15 minutes or 45, his introduction would electrify the away end and offer a first hint of how Liverpool’s attack might evolve this season.

Under the lights

The stage is set. Portman Road under the lights, a promoted side playing with ambition, and a heavyweight still trying to find its stride under a new coach.
