Liverpool's Late Attempt to Sign Chelsea Defender Fails

On transfer deadline day, Liverpool tried to secure a loan deal for Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto, but the move collapsed after both Premier League clubs failed to agree on financial terms. The Reds aimed to strengthen their defense with a temporary addition, yet Chelsea insisted on a permanent sale, which Liverpool was unwilling to pursue.

Deadline Day Negotiations

According to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Liverpool made a last-minute push to bring in the 23-year-old defender on loan. Manager Andoni Iraola wanted Gusto to add depth and competition at right-back. Unfortunately, the talks broke down because Liverpool only wanted a straight loan without any obligation to buy, while Chelsea demanded a permanent transfer.

This summer, Liverpool’s activity has been relatively low-key, having already signed Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, Ronald Araujo, and Bradley Barcola before the window closed.

Chelsea's Financial Demands Halt Transfer

Chelsea refused to let Gusto go on a temporary basis and pushed for a full sale instead. Earlier this summer, the London club valued the defender at around £75 million following interest from Manchester City. Liverpool were hesitant to meet such a price, especially after investing in other players.

The disagreement over payment and transfer terms meant no agreement could be reached, ending Liverpool’s hopes of signing the Frenchman. Chelsea made it clear they would only allow Gusto to leave if a substantial long-term deal was agreed.

Xabi Alonso Keeps Faith in Gusto

With the transfer off, Gusto will remain at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has praised the right-back’s importance, starting him in recent Premier League wins against Fulham and Brighton, plus the Carabao Cup victory over Luton.

Gusto’s athleticism and tactical fit have impressed since his arrival in England, and he is expected to start again when Chelsea face Arsenal in the Premier League.

What Lies Ahead for Liverpool?

After missing out on Gusto, Liverpool will rely on their current defensive squad for the first half of the season. Jeremie Frimpong remains the preferred choice at right-back, while hopes rest on Conor Bradley recovering quickly from a knee injury sustained in January. The busy schedule with domestic and European matches will test Liverpool’s defensive resources.
