Liverpool’s Pursuit of Bradley Barcola Complicated by Bayern Munich

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has run straight into one of European football’s biggest roadblocks: Bayern Munich.

The Paris Saint-Germain winger, already priced like a superstar, is now being lined up in Bavaria as a possible heir to Michael Olise. For Andoni Iraola and Liverpool’s recruitment team, a deal that was already complicated just became a lot more delicate.

Liverpool’s “top, top, top” winger target

Liverpool’s interest is not a whisper on the fringes of the market. On July 9, transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported that the club are keen to land Barcola in this window, with the Frenchman viewed as a major attacking addition.

Inside Paris, the situation is tense. Sources indicate Barcola has told PSG he wants to leave this summer. The French champions do not want to lose him and are attempting to drag the conversation back towards a new contract. They see a future cornerstone; he sees a different path.

The price reflects that stand-off. PSG, fresh from winning both Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season, are demanding at least €150m (£128m, $170.5m) if they are forced to cash in. That is not a negotiation starting point. It is a wall.

Despite that, Fabrizio Romano has been unwavering about Liverpool’s stance. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he stressed that Barcola has been at the top of Liverpool’s winger shortlist for months.

“Barcola, let me repeat, today, yesterday, last month, two months ago, three months ago, Barcola is the top, top, top target of Liverpool,” Romano said, underlining the club’s long-term focus on the 23-year-old. He added that Liverpool “love Barcola” and remain “super keen” on the player, even if the financial side of the deal could prove extremely difficult.

Romano also made one thing clear: Barcelona are not in the race, with Jorge Mendes not involved in Barcola’s representation.

So Liverpool know what they want. They also know what it costs. Now they have to deal with Bayern.

Bayern circle as Real Madrid eye Olise

The German champions are not moving directly for Barcola yet. Their interest is tied to another saga.

Real Madrid want Michael Olise. Florentino Perez is personally keen on the winger, and when the Real president leans in, the market usually shifts. If Bayern are pushed into a sale, they will need a replacement who can step straight into an elite attacking line.

Enter Barcola.

Bild journalist Christian Falk reports that Barcola is firmly on Bayern’s shortlist if they have to replace Olise. On his CFBayernInsider platform, Falk wrote that he had already flagged internal Bayern discussions about the France international last summer, and even the summer before that. Barcola has been on their radar for some time, not a sudden panic option.

“He’s on the shortlist,” Falk noted, before adding that there is “no chance” of signing him at the moment. The reasons are familiar: PSG want to hand him a new contract, and the figures being mentioned are in the €150m range.

So Bayern wait. They do not want to sell Olise this summer, but the club hierarchy is already gaming out scenarios if the Frenchman refuses to extend his deal in Munich.

A contract clock that everyone is watching

This is where the timing becomes crucial.

Barcola’s current PSG contract runs to 2028, one year less than Olise’s deal at Bayern. That detail matters. If PSG keep him this summer and no club is willing or able to meet their asking price, the dynamic changes next year.

With one year fewer on his contract in 2025, PSG’s leverage weakens. If Barcola is still on the market then, and if Bayern are forced into a late decision on Olise, the numbers could look very different.

Falk points to that exact scenario: if Liverpool or another wealthy club do not strike this summer, and Barcola edges closer to the end of his deal, PSG will face a far tougher decision. Hold their price and risk losing value, or cash in at a reduced fee.

From Bayern’s perspective, Barcola ticks several boxes. Falk believes he would “fit in perfectly” in Munich, and the salary structure backs that up. The winger currently earns around €7m-8m gross in Paris, roughly half of what Olise is paid at Bayern. For a club that still pays close attention to its wage hierarchy, that is a powerful argument.

Liverpool’s window of opportunity narrows

For Liverpool, the picture is stark.

They have identified Barcola as the standout winger target. They know he wants out of PSG. They know PSG will only sell for enormous money. Now they also know that if they hesitate, Bayern are ready to step in when the conditions shift in their favour.

Liverpool can try to move now, when the fee is highest but the competition is clearer. Or they can wait and hope the market softens, risking a future bidding war with a Bayern side potentially flush with Olise money and armed with a long-standing admiration for Barcola.

One thing is certain: a player once viewed as an ambitious, left-field target is now sitting at the crossroads of three European giants. Whoever blinks first may decide not just Barcola’s future, but the shape of two forward lines at the very top of the game.
