Lion City Sailors Sack Coach Jesus Casas Before Season Opener

SINGAPORE – Lion City Sailors have stunned the Singapore football scene by sacking head coach Jesus Casas just five days before they open the new campaign against Tampines Rovers.

The club announced the decision on Sept 1 with a brief, 30-word statement on Facebook, confirming that they had parted ways with the Spaniard and that assistant coach Varo Moreno will take charge of the first team until further notice.

No explanation. No farewell quotes. Just a clean break.

Casas’ exit comes barely months into what was supposed to be a long-term project. Appointed in February, the former Iraq coach had signed a contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season with the reigning Singapore Premier League (SPL) champions.

His résumé had looked substantial. Before taking the Iraq job, the 52-year-old worked with several youth teams in Spain and served as assistant manager to Javi Gracia at English side Watford in early 2018. He had also been on the shortlist for the Singapore national team role, a position that ultimately went to Gavin Lee.

His name has not been far from the international market either. The Korea Herald recently reported that Casas had applied for the vacant South Korea national team job and was among three candidates on the final shortlist.

Now, his chapter in Singapore ends almost as abruptly as it began.

Casas had come in as the replacement for Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic, who was dismissed on Feb 6, a day after a 2-0 home defeat by Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship. Rankovic’s tenure was far from barren – he led the Sailors to the Singapore Cup for the third time during a 2½-year spell that also brought an SPL title – but he also oversaw a group-stage exit in the Asian Champions League Two, a competition in which the club had reached the final just a season earlier.

The Sailors have continued to set the domestic standard. On May 3, they secured back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in their history, grinding out a 0-0 draw against Tampines Rovers to get over the line. They finished the season two points clear of the Stags.

Now the two sides square off again on Sept 6 in the Community Shield at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm – the traditional curtain-raiser to the 2026-27 SPL season – with Moreno suddenly thrust into the spotlight.

The league campaign proper then begins for the Sailors on Sept 12, when they face Hougang United at Bishan Stadium, also at 7.30pm.

Champions, a new season, and a dugout in flux. The trophies are still in the cabinet, but the question now is simple: who will be trusted to lead this squad through the next era?
