Jeff Bezos-Led Group Close to Buying One-Third Stake in Liverpool FC
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly part of a group on the verge of acquiring about one-third ownership of Liverpool Football Club, a Premier League giant. The consortium is said to be led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, with Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin also involved.
The club's current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), acknowledged last month that Bhatia’s group had approached them with interest in making a strategic minority investment.
"An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club," an FSG spokesperson told AFP.
Bhatia was previously a shareholder in Championship side Queens Park Rangers. Sources from Sky News suggest the deal could be finalized soon, with FSG expected to announce it within the week.
At 62, Bezos ranks among the richest globally, with Forbes estimating his net worth at over $280 billion. Saverin’s fortune stands near $33 billion. Bezos has looked into NFL team purchases before but opted out of deals involving the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.
The investment would highlight continued American financial interest in the Premier League, reportedly valuing Liverpool around $6 billion. FSG acquired the club back in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million) and sold a minority stake to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity in 2023.
On the field, Liverpool claimed the 2024/25 Premier League title under manager Arne Slot, though he was dismissed in May following a turbulent season.
