Avellino are pushing to pull off one of the most audacious transfers Italian football has seen in years: James Rodriguez in Serie B.

The club’s sporting director Mario Aiello has gone on record to confirm that negotiations with the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich playmaker are not only real, but close to the finish line.

“The negotiations are in a decisive phase, and the agreement could be concluded in the coming hours,” Aiello said, underlining just how advanced the talks have become.

James, now 35, is a free agent after his spell in MLS with Montreal Impact, and Avellino have moved aggressively to lure him to Campania. The key? Alessandro Nesta.
