Ayyoub Bouaddi: Manchester City's Young Midfield Sensation

Manchester City’s latest midfield gamble is only 18, already past 100 senior games and walking straight into the weight of expectation.

Ayyoub Bouaddi has been talked about in big terms for a while. Not without reason. He burst through at Lille, racking up competitive minutes at a rate that makes most teenagers look stuck in slow motion. While others were still finding their feet in academy football, he was collecting France caps at every youth level from U16 to U21.

Then came the twist.

Bouaddi switched allegiance to Morocco, joining an Atlas Lions generation intent on leaving a mark on the 2026 World Cup. By the time that tournament rolled around, his reputation had already outgrown Ligue 1. A move to one of Europe’s heavyweights felt inevitable. The only real question was who would get there first.

City did.

The Premier League champions moved decisively to land one of the most coveted young midfielders in the game, beating a queue of elite clubs to his signature. For a teenager, it was a seismic step. For City, it was another long-term bet on a player they believe can dominate the centre of the pitch for years.

Enzo Maresca is not rushing him. Not yet. Bouaddi has been eased in with two substitute appearances, glimpses rather than full showcases, but the internal expectation is clear: this is a player they see growing into a fixture, one of the first names on the teamsheet once he adjusts to the demands of English football.

Bouaddi himself sounds like a player who knows exactly where he wants to go – and believes he has chosen the right platform to get there.

“Manchester City are, for me, the best club in the world. It’s a dream to be here and be able to call myself a City player. I have spent most of my life working hard to become the best player I can be and reach the top of the game,” he told the club’s official website after sealing the move.

He has studied this team from afar. Now he wants to grow inside it.

“I’ve watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football. And they have shown they are winners – this club feels like it’s built to win. The squad is world-class and Enzo is a top manager. And I’m really looking forward to playing at the Etihad Stadium, in front of all the fans.

“I have plenty of improving to do. I am only 18. I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title.”

Inside the club, the belief in what he can become is just as strong.

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, did not bother to play down expectations when he spoke about the signing. “Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high - a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo.

“We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City. We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential.”

So the stage is set. An 18-year-old with 100 senior games, a new international flag on his chest and a dressing room full of serial winners around him. The billing is huge. The pathway is clear.

Now it’s down to Bouaddi to turn promise into something far more permanent.
