Jamal Musiala Addresses Treatable Absence Seizures After Collapsing Again

Jamal Musiala has revealed he is dealing with “treatable absence seizures” after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in four days, but insists there is no long-term danger to his health.

The Bayern Munich winger went down eight minutes after coming on as a substitute in Tuesday night’s friendly against Heidenheim. The 23-year-old had suffered a similar episode in Saturday’s warm-up match against RB Leipzig, raising immediate concern around one of Europe’s most gifted young players.

This time, Musiala chose to speak.

“I am doing well. I am incredibly grateful for your messages and your support!” he wrote on Instagram, addressing the flood of anxiety from fans and teammates. “I understand that many of you are worried. I would like to put those concerns to rest today and explain the situation.”

He then laid out the diagnosis in clear terms. “I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary – but treatable – absence seizures resulting from a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the kind of incidents seen recently, such as during the match against Leipzig or the game in Heidenheim.”

The images from both games were jarring. On Tuesday, Musiala entered the fray after 61 minutes, replacing Ismael Saibari. Within eight minutes he was on the turf, appearing dazed as medical staff rushed to him. He was eventually helped from the field and substituted by Cassiano Kiala, with Bayern sporting director Max Eberl quickly trying to calm the situation post-match.

“Jamal will speak about this in the near future. We knew about it and we are aware of the situation,” Eberl said, hinting that the club and player had already been working closely with specialists.

Musiala’s message confirmed that. He stressed that, while the episodes may look dramatic, they are under control.

“I know they might look alarming at first glance, but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life,” he explained. “I am receiving excellent medical care and remain very optimistic. FC Bayern and my personal support network are right by my side, helping me through this. Importantly, there is no further health risk involved.”

That line matters. Bayern’s medical team and neurologists have cleared him to continue, and Musiala made it clear that stepping away from the game is not his plan.

“In close consultation and regular contact with the experts, it was my personal wish to face this challenge; with the medical clearance of the neurologists, I want to continue doing what helps my recovery most: simply living my life and pursuing my passion for playing football.”

On the night, Bayern still did their job. They beat Heidenheim 4-2, with Felipe Chávez, Arijon Ibrahimovic, Luis Díaz and Nathaniel Brown all on the scoresheet. But the result felt secondary to the sight of one of their brightest stars again needing treatment on the pitch, just days after a similar collapse against RB Leipzig.

For now, Musiala’s words draw a line under the most pressing fear: this is a serious condition, but a manageable one, and he has chosen to confront it without stepping away from the stage where he made his name. The next question is not whether he will play, but how he and Bayern navigate a season with his health under such intense, public scrutiny.
