Iraola's Liverpool Injury Concerns Ahead of Premier League Opener

Andoni Iraola is still waiting for clarity. His first Premier League team sheet as Liverpool head coach is taking shape slowly, and not entirely on his own terms.

Liverpool open their league campaign on Sunday afternoon away at Newcastle United, but the excitement of a new era comes with a familiar caveat: injuries are already biting.

Long-term absentees cloud Iraola’s debut

Four senior players are certain to miss the trip to St James’ Park.

  • Hugo Ekitike faces the longest road back. The forward, signed to add cutting edge in the final third, suffered a serious Achilles injury in early April and is battling to play again before the end of the calendar year.
  • On the right side of defence, Conor Bradley is still working his way back from major knee damage sustained at Arsenal in early January. His return will not come in time for Iraola’s first competitive game.
  • In central defence, Giovanni Leoni is at least edging closer. The centre-back has been sidelined since last September with an ACL injury but is nearing a return to first-team training. Sunday, though, comes too soon.
  • Joe Gomez, usually the man Liverpool turn to in a crisis, is also out. He picked up a muscle problem in the opening pre-season friendly against Sunderland and has yet to shake it off, leaving Iraola short of experience at the back.

Fresh doubts add to Liverpool’s selection puzzle

The confirmed absentees are only part of the story. Several other players sit in the grey area between hope and expectation.

  • Curtis Jones, whose future has been the subject of transfer interest from Inter, has missed the last two weekends with a hip issue. His availability for Newcastle remains in doubt and could force Iraola into an early reshuffle in midfield.
  • In goal, Freddie Woodman is another concern. The goalkeeper missed both friendlies against Como on Sunday and has been managing an injury throughout pre-season, leaving Liverpool monitoring his condition closely.
  • Two youngsters who might have offered energy from the bench are also ruled out. Striker Jayden Danns and midfielder Stefan Bajcetic are both sidelined as they recover from muscle problems, trimming Iraola’s options even further.

Newcastle’s own problems

Newcastle have their own headaches going into the opener, on top of a summer that has already seen several senior departures.

  • Joelinton is out for several weeks with an undisclosed issue, depriving Eddie Howe of one of his most physical and versatile midfielders.
  • At the back, there is uncertainty too. Valentino Livramento and Fabian Schar are both rated doubtful for Liverpool’s visit, raising questions over Newcastle’s defensive stability just as the season begins.

So Iraola’s first Premier League assignment arrives with caveats on both sides. Two big clubs, one new chapter, and a growing injury list already shaping the story of opening day.
