Rodri Joins Barcelona: A New Chapter After Manchester City

Weeks of rumours are over. Barcelona have their new midfield general. Rodri is officially a Barça player, the club’s third major signing of the summer, with Joao Cancelo expected to follow.

The Spaniard arrived with a mixture of excitement and honesty about what he has just left behind.

“It was a tough decision,” he admitted, speaking for the first time as a Barcelona player. “I’m leaving Manchester City, a club that has given me everything and where I’ve been incredibly happy. I’ll be eternally grateful.”

He made it clear, though, that this move was no whim. It was his priority.

“Barcelona is a fantastic club, a global benchmark for its approach to football and the values it represents. I had other options, but Barcelona was my first choice, and I made that clear to Laporta.”

Choosing Barça over comfort

Rodri described the transfer as the end of a chapter rather than an escape.

“When offers came in, the first step was understanding that a chapter at my club had ended and it was time to look for a way out. It took me a while to accept that. It was the most special club I’ve ever been at.”

From there, it became a calculated decision, not a sentimental one.

“I studied and analysed them; they were very important clubs. Together with my family and friends, we made the decision we thought was best. My decisions have always been linked to a sporting challenge.”

That challenge now lies at the heart of Barcelona’s midfield, in a team chasing a third straight league title and that elusive Champions League.

Flick’s call and a bold style

One of the key factors was Hansi Flick. A conversation with the new coach lit the spark.

“I spoke with Hansi. He conveyed his enthusiasm to me. I’m very motivated to train with him; he has a very bold style of play, which appeals to me a lot. I still have room for improvement, and he can help me develop further.”

Rodri revealed he has been in “closer contact” with Deco and Jan as well, describing Flick as “a transparent coach” who clearly sets out his expectations.

“He brings the experience the team needs. I want to inspire my teammates and contribute.”

Walking in Busquets’ shadow

No holding midfielder joins Barcelona without one name hanging over him: Sergio Busquets. Rodri didn’t dodge the comparison. He embraced it.

“He’s been a great role model. I understand the comparison because of our position and style. It’s a privilege. We have different characteristics and things in common.”

He has studied Busquets for years. Now, he will see him more often.

“I’ve always admired him and tried to learn from him. Now he’s with the reserve team, so I’ll see him a bit more. A great friend, teammate, and role model.”

Ready from day one

Any doubts about his physical condition were quickly dismissed. Rodri confirmed he is available immediately after a minor procedure.

“I’m ready to play now. The operation was nothing serious, it was an outpatient procedure. I hope to be able to train normally tomorrow.

“Whatever the manager deems appropriate. I just need to finalise the transfer and get under Hansi’s orders as soon as possible.”

Barcelona are not signing a project for later. They are getting a player who wants to start dictating games straight away.

Alvarez talk shut down

No unveiling at Barça passes without transfer talk. Rodri was inevitably asked about the club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, but he stayed firmly on the diplomatic line.

“I tend to be quite cautious with players who don’t belong to the club. I respect Atletico de Madrid. Julian is a great footballer, one of the best strikers.

“That’s all I can say. It’s clear that Deco and the management are always thinking about improving the squad.”

The message was clear: he is here to talk about Barcelona, not other clubs’ players.

A young dressing room and one standout talent

Rodri already knows much of this squad. He has been training with many of his new teammates for almost two months and felt the energy right away.

“It’s been a warm welcome. It’s a very young dressing room, eager to do important things.

“I hope to contribute to what they’ve brought me here for. I’m joining a cohesive and enthusiastic dressing room.”

One name, though, drew special attention from him: Marc Bernal.

“I’m a 30-year-old player with experience that many players on this team don’t have. I’m here to contribute, to share my knowledge with my teammates. Marc has shown spectacular progress; he’s made an incredible recovery from his injury.

“I hope to help him as much as I can and teach him what I think is important. He’ll be able to grow alongside me, and that’s what matters.”

Midfield built for now – and for what comes next

Rodri didn’t hide his admiration for the structure already in place at Barça, especially in his area of the pitch.

“Barça have been growing tremendously in recent years. They’ve won two consecutive league titles, with all the difficulty that entails, and are on the verge of winning the long-awaited Champions League.

“One of the reasons isn’t just the present; it’s seeing the potential for the future. The midfield is spectacular. We have outstanding players in every position. I want to convey the desire to keep improving.”

That midfield, now with Rodri at its core, is being asked to carry the club into a new era of dominance, not just survive the next season.

Lamine Yamal, the team man

Amid all the individual hype around Lamine Yamal, Rodri chose to highlight something else: his mentality.

“He sees football as a team sport. We’re here to win trophies; we don’t pay that much attention to individual performances.”

Rodri arrives as a champion, a leader and a reference point in the middle of the pitch. Barcelona have given him the keys to a midfield they believe is ready to conquer Europe again.

Now the question is simple: can he turn that “sporting challenge” he craved into the trophies this club demands?
