Barcelona Close in on Rodri After Breakthrough Deal
After days of tense back-and-forth, FC Barcelona have finally broken Manchester City’s resistance and are on the verge of landing Rodri in one of the standout moves of the summer.
The two clubs have reached an agreement in principle for the 30-year-old midfielder worth €76.5 million. €60 million of that will be paid up front, with the remaining sum tied to performance-related add-ons. For a player of his stature, Barcelona see it as a calculated gamble rather than a luxury.
Rodri, fresh from winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Golden Ball while captaining Spain, has already received permission from City to travel to Catalonia and wrap up the transfer.
Change of plan for medicals
The final steps have not been entirely straightforward. The original plan had Rodri completing his medical in England today before flying out to Barcelona. That schedule has been scrapped.
Journalist Achraf Ben Ayad reports that the Spain captain will now undergo his medical tests in Catalonia on Tuesday morning, 18 August, after Barcelona managed to secure a flight for him to travel to the city earlier than expected.
Rodri is expected to land in Barcelona this evening. Once the medical is completed on Tuesday, he will sign his contract and the club will move to make the transfer official.
Flick gets his midfield general
Barcelona are not just signing a name. They are bringing in one of the most complete midfielders in world football, a player who has just led his country to the biggest prize in the game and dominated the tournament.
At 30, Rodri is not a long-term project. He is a win-now signing. His experience at the highest level, his authority in the dressing room, and his relentless winning mentality are exactly what Hansi Flick wants at the heart of his team, on top of his control, positioning, and passing range on the pitch.
One question lingers. If all goes smoothly, will Rodri be thrown straight into the spotlight in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly on 19 August, or will Barcelona hold their new leader back for when the real battles begin?
