Juventus Signs Guglielmo Vicario on Loan from Tottenham
Juventus have moved quickly to lock in Guglielmo Vicario, agreeing a deal with Tottenham that will see the goalkeeper join on an initial loan with an option to buy next year for £8.6m.
The switch comes after the Turin club backed away from a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez. Villa had prepared for the Argentina international’s possible departure by striking a deal worth around £30m for Parma’s Zion Suzuki, but Juventus saw a €10m bid for Martínez rejected over the weekend and walked away. Martínez is currently out with a finger injury, and Juventus have chosen a different route.
For Vicario, it marks a sharp change in status. Signed by Spurs in 2023 for £17.2m and trusted as first choice for much of his time in north London, he has lost his place under Roberto De Zerbi to Antonin Kinsky. De Zerbi has also brought in Martin Dubravka on a free to sit behind the new No 1, leaving Vicario squeezed out and ready for a fresh start in Serie A.
The 29-year-old has made almost 120 appearances for Spurs since his arrival, but he now joins a growing exodus. Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Will Lankshear and Yves Bissouma have already departed this summer, and Pape Matar Sarr could follow. Everton and Nottingham Forest both want the Senegal midfielder, who is valued at £30m.
Spurs, though, are not simply trimming. They are rebuilding with force. The club have already spent more than £200m on six new signings in this window and are still pushing hard in the market.
Savinho is high on their list. The Brazil forward, owned by Manchester City, was left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff and is understood to be open to a move. Tottenham are also heavily linked with Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo as De Zerbi looks to add more firepower to his attack.
Vicario’s exit clears another wage and squad slot. How aggressively Spurs fill it could define the shape of De Zerbi’s first season in charge.
