Igor Matanovic Responds to Surprise Transfer Speculation

After the match against Bremen, Matanovic quickly dismissed any talk of an impending move to England. He emphasized that he has had no contact with any club regarding a transfer. “As far as I’m concerned, I’m currently at Freiburg,” he told reporters. The 6ft 5in striker credited his recent success more to mental clarity than just physical training, explaining that being clear-headed and confident is key to his performance.

Since joining Freiburg from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, Matanovic’s career has taken off. He scored 15 goals in all competitions last season, helping Freiburg reach the Europa League final before they lost to Aston Villa. Reflecting on his move, he said, “Yes, of course. It was a huge step.” His time at Freiburg also led to his selection for Croatia’s World Cup squad, which he describes as a major achievement despite not scoring in his appearances.

Matanovic’s contract with Freiburg runs until June 2029, so the club isn’t rushed to sell. Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur need to make strong offers before the transfer window closes on Tuesday if they want to secure his signature.
