Ian Wright ‘Gutted’ as Arsenal Misses Out on Morgan Rogers to Chelsea

Ian Wright has laid bare his frustration at Arsenal’s summer business, admitting he was “gutted” to see Morgan Rogers join Chelsea after the Gunners had led the chase for weeks.

Arsenal went into the window determined to add another high-end attacking option, even after striking early to bring in Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge. The club’s recruitment team drew up an ambitious list: Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez all sat near the top of Mikel Arteta’s wishlist.

They didn’t come. Any of them.

Arteta still saw his squad strengthened in other areas. Bruno Guimaraes arrived to bolster midfield, Ezri Konsa came in to add depth and authority at the back, and Arsenal emerged from the window with a deeper, more rounded group. But for Wright, the glaring omission up front overshadowed the rest of the work – especially once Chelsea closed a £117m deal for Rogers.

“It’s not a disastrous window but if I’m Mikel, I wouldn’t be happy with how this window has gone simply because we’ve gone another window where we have not got that forward,” he said.

Arteta has been open about the need for a true difference-maker in attack, particularly in tight, high-stakes games. Wright pointed to Arsenal’s struggles in Paris as the perfect example.

“Mikel has talked about getting players to take us to that level, he did it again after Paris, where we didn’t have that player to break them. That is the player Mikel wanted. They chased Vini until the end of the earth and left Morgan Rogers dangling.”

For Wright, the issue isn’t just about depth on the left. It’s about ignoring exactly the kind of profile the manager has been calling for while pursuing a superstar dream in Vinicius Junior.

Arsenal’s title ambitions remain intact. Bukayo Saka is back. Martin Odegaard is back. Kai Havertz is back and forming part of a familiar attacking core. Yet Wright believes the absence of a new elite left-sided attacker could prove costly as the season wears on.

“You say we have got those types of players but that is what Mikel wanted. It is a position where we need that player. Of course Saka is back, Odegaard is back, Havertz is back and playing together, but he wanted that difference-maker,” Wright said.

“He [Rogers] is the one we were linked with ages ago and he would have loved to have come, I can feel it.”

For Wright, the way Arsenal handled their pursuit of Vinicius Junior may have sent the wrong message to other targets.

“There’s something that’s happened with Arsenal with the way they were going for Vini. If you’re a player and you see a team going for him, you think, ‘I thought they were interested in me?’ It is the player the manager wanted. Chelsea thought, well if you’re not going to pay it, we’ll pay it. I’m gutted, I would have loved him to come.”

Now, the story takes an immediate twist. Arsenal’s next Premier League assignment is a trip to face Chelsea, the club who gazumped them for Rogers and have loudly signalled their own title intentions.

Peter Crouch expects that statement to continue.

“Great game! Two teams looking good as well. I’m going to put the cat amongst the pigeons and I’m going to go for a 3-2 Chelsea win. I think they’ve announced themselves as title contenders,” Crouch said.

Arsenal travel across London still searching for that final attacking piece Arteta craves. Chelsea walk out with Rogers in blue and growing noise around their own title push. Which vision of the future looks more convincing will be written over 90 minutes this weekend.
