Harry Kane Leads English Charge for 2026 Ballon d'Or

Harry Kane will lead a powerful English charge for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or after being named among the headline nominees alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.

The Bayern Munich striker goes into the ceremony as the bookmakers’ clear favourite. The award will be handed out on 26 October at the London Palladium, the first time the Ballon d’Or has left Paris for the English capital.

Kane’s case is overwhelming. He hit a staggering 73 goals in 65 games for club and country, spearheading another Bundesliga title for Bayern and captaining England to a World Cup bronze medal. No Englishman has lifted the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane now stands on the brink of ending that 25-year wait.

He will not have a free run at it. Holder Ousmane Dembele is back in the frame, joined by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappe among the leading contenders to deny the 33-year-old.

Premier League interest runs deep. Rice is one of several England-based players on the 30-man list, joined by Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel, Erling Haaland and William Saliba as they all chase the game’s most coveted individual prize under the lights of the Palladium.

Lionel Messi’s name appears once again, extending his remarkable run of nominations. Cristiano Ronaldo’s does not. The Portugal great misses out on the shortlist this time, a notable omission in an era he has helped define.

Yamal headlines new generation

Lamine Yamal’s rise continues at breathtaking speed. The teenager fronts the Men’s Young Talent of the Year shortlist, a category that also features Bournemouth forward Junior Kroupi.

Manchester City’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Aston Villa’s recent signing Johan Manzambi are also recognised among the brightest emerging talents. On the women’s side, Chelsea’s Veerle Buurman is nominated for the Young Talent accolade, underlining the Premier League’s growing influence across both games.

Premier League bosses in the frame

The English top flight is equally prominent in the dugout awards. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery are both shortlisted for Men’s Coach of the Year. They go up against Spain boss Luis De La Fuente, Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique.

Arteta’s impact stretches beyond the technical area. Arsenal are also nominated for Men’s Club of the Year, a reflection of their resurgence at the sharp end of European football.

Vozinha among elite keepers

Between the posts, Cape Verde star Vozinha earns a place on the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year shortlist after his standout World Cup displays. He faces competition from Arsenal’s David Raya and Emiliano Martinez, now at Chelsea, among others in a fiercely contested category.

London takes centre stage

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, created by France Football and co-organised with UEFA since 2024. To mark the milestone, the ceremony has been moved from its traditional Paris home to London, a deliberate nod to the award’s very first winner, England and Blackpool legend Stanley Matthews.

Seventy years on from Matthews, London will again watch one of its own step into the spotlight. The stage is set. Now it is up to Kane and his rivals to decide whose name belongs on that golden ball.
