FIFA Revises World Cup Bottle Policy: Fans Can Bring Sealed Water Bottles

Fifa has rowed back on its controversial World Cup bottle policy after a backlash from fans, confirming that sealed disposable water bottles will now be allowed inside stadiums.

The original late change, which banned all bottles along with cups, jars and cans on safety grounds, drew heavy criticism from supporters’ groups worried about cost, comfort and basic access to water during matches.

Under the revised rules, only hard-sided reusable containers remain prohibited.

“Each spectator can bring with them one 20 ounce (560ml) soft, plastic disposable factory-sealed water bottle into the stadium,” said World Cup 2026 chief operating officer Heimo Schirgi, as the governing body moved to calm the storm.

The line is now clear: soft, single-use plastic bottles with intact seals are acceptable; rigid, resealable bottles are not.

“What is not allowed are hard-sided resealable water containers, which could pose a safety and security risk,” Schirgi added, underlining the security argument that triggered the clampdown in the first place.

The adjustment stops short of the full reversal many environmentally minded fans wanted, but it does ease fears of dry stands and soaring concession queues at a tournament that will stretch across a continent and, in many venues, into punishing summer heat.
