Fenerbahce Wins Race for Mason Greenwood in Record Marseille Sale
Fenerbahce have beaten heavyweight competition to land Mason Greenwood, striking a deal with Marseille that underlines both the scale of the Turkish club’s ambition and the financial squeeze in the south of France.
Foot Mercato report that the Istanbul side have agreed a total package worth €42m (£35.6m), built around a €40m fixed fee and €2m in performance-related bonuses. For Marseille, it is a sale they did not want to make, but ultimately one they could not refuse.
Marseille cash in on their prized asset
Greenwood was tied to a long-term contract until June 2029, a cornerstone of Marseille’s sporting project and one of the most dangerous forwards in Ligue 1. Yet the club’s hierarchy have been working under a strict cost-cutting plan, and the numbers finally dictated the outcome.
They had richer offers on the table. Atletico Madrid pushed hard. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli also came forward with a higher financial proposal. Marseille accepted those bids, but the player chose a different path. Greenwood wanted Turkey, wanted Fenerbahce, and that preference shaped the endgame.
The deal rips up Marseille’s record books. The fee eclipses the €39m Chelsea paid for Michy Batshuayi in 2016, setting a new benchmark for outgoing transfers at the club and providing a significant injection to balance the accounts.
A devastating Ligue 1 spell
Greenwood leaves France with numbers that justify the scramble for his signature. Across two seasons in Ligue 1 and cup competitions, he delivered 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 competitive appearances. That is elite production by any standard.
Those figures persuaded Fenerbahce to push hard and early. They are not just buying potential; they are paying for a proven, high-end finisher in his prime years, and committing to him with a four-year contract.
The forward will be rewarded handsomely. Reports indicate a salary of around €10m (£8.5m) per season in Istanbul, a clear signal of his status in the project and of Fenerbahce’s determination to operate at a different financial level.
Fenerbahce’s statement of intent
This is not an isolated splash. Head coach Ismail Kartal is overseeing a major rebuild aimed at carrying Fenerbahce through a gruelling domestic and European calendar. Greenwood arrives as part of a wave of high-profile signings, including Nathan Ake and Vedat Muriqi, designed to deepen the squad and raise the ceiling.
On the pitch, the fit looks obvious. Greenwood brings goals, versatility across the front line, and the kind of penalty-box composure that can decide tight title races. The challenge now is adaptation: new league, new country, new pressure.
And the pressure will be real. Fenerbahce are chasing down a juggernaut. Galatasaray have strung together four straight Super Lig titles, tightening their grip on Turkish football and turning every season into a test of Fenerbahce’s nerve as much as their quality.
Greenwood steps into that rivalry as a marquee signing, expected not just to contribute but to tilt the balance. How quickly he finds his Ligue 1 rhythm in Istanbul may well define whether Fenerbahce can finally break Galatasaray’s hold on the crown.
