Evan Ferguson's Road to Recovery: Brighton's Striker Edges Closer to Return

Evan Ferguson is edging back towards the Brighton first team, but his manager Fabian Hurzeler refuses to circle a date on the calendar.

The Republic of Ireland striker has endured a brutal spell on the sidelines after an ankle injury wrecked the second half of last season and cut short his loan at Roma. He had begun to find his feet in Serie A, scoring five times in 22 games, before surgery in March halted everything.

Since then, it has been a grind. No shortcuts, no quick fixes, just months of rehab while Brighton moved on without him.

They have started this Premier League campaign with a thumping 4-0 win over Aston Villa and a chaotic 4-3 defeat at Chelsea, all with Ferguson still stuck in recovery mode. An early October return had been floated as a realistic target. Hurzeler is not buying into that kind of certainty.

“He’s getting closer,” the Brighton boss said ahead of Saturday’s home game against Leeds United. “He’s in his rehab. I can’t give a clear timescale for when he will be back.”

What he can give is a reminder of just how high Ferguson’s ceiling is.

“Everyone knows what Evan is capable of doing. He proved it a few years ago here at Brighton. I think he was one of the best strikers in the Premier League, so hopefully he can get back on track.”

That is not empty praise. Three years ago, the Meath native became the first teenager since Wayne Rooney to hit 10 Premier League goals in a calendar year. He looked built for the division – strong, ruthless, unfazed by reputation. Yet injuries have stalked his young career, repeatedly halting his momentum just as it gathers pace.

Hurzeler is convinced that, if Brighton can get him fully fit and mentally right, the club will have a formidable weapon again.

“Hopefully he gets his mind in the right position,” he said. “I think that’s the key after these kinds of injuries, that you get back on track and have complete trust in your own body.

“Only if you feel really safe and trust your own body are you capable of playing at the highest level. That’s the main focus now, and then let’s see what happens.”

Brighton know exactly what they’re waiting for. The question is how long it will take for Ferguson to trust that ankle enough to start bullying Premier League defences again.
