Mikel Arteta will send out Arsenal against Chelsea on Sunday with one eye on London bragging rights and the other fixed firmly on his treatment room.

Mosquera scare played down

Cristhian Mosquera gave Arsenal a brief fright in Monday’s tight 1-0 win at Aston Villa when he was withdrawn and replaced by Ezri Konsa. Given his recent impact, any hint of a muscular issue raised alarms.

Arteta moved quickly to cool them.

“He was more a precaution than anything else, so we'll have to see tomorrow in the session how he feels,” the Arsenal manager said, making it clear the hamstring concern is still being assessed rather than treated as a serious injury.

Mosquera was not spotted in Thursday’s training images from London Colney, but Arsenal are not ruling him out yet.

Timber edging back

The more encouraging sight for Arsenal fans came elsewhere on the pitches at Colney. Jurrien Timber, yet to play a minute this season after a minor groin procedure in the summer, was back in light training on Thursday.

Arteta did not hide his satisfaction at the defender’s progress and hinted there is an outside chance Timber could be involved against Chelsea.

“Yeah, he's in really good condition at the moment. As I said, he's been now a few weeks on the pitch and he's been training with us now, so he's in a good place,” Arteta said.

A place in Sunday’s squad would still be a bold step, but the tone has shifted. Timber is no longer a long-term absentee; he is moving into contention.

Guimaraes a doubt after fresh knock

The picture is less clear with Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian midfielder picked up another knock in the Villa game and faces a race to be ready for Chelsea.

Guimaraes has already missed one league match this season – the opening 3-0 win over Coventry City – after suffering a problem in the Community Shield rout of Manchester City. His stop-start August has clearly tested Arsenal’s medical team.

“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he's been assessed. Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training,” Arteta said.

Like Mosquera, Guimaraes was not among those photographed in Thursday’s session, underlining the uncertainty around his involvement. Arteta, though, still hopes to have him available for a game that could hinge on midfield control.

Saliba named, but patience required

There was another significant name in the background of Arteta’s press conference: William Saliba.

The centre-back, dealing with a serious back issue suffered at the World Cup, has been included in both Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad and their Champions League list. That administrative decision matters. It signals belief inside the club that Saliba can return before squads are resubmitted in January.

Pressed for an update, Arteta kept it realistic but optimistic.

“Yes, we don't really know the amount of weeks he's going to be out because it's about a healing process in the beginning, it's a bit different,” he explained. “We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”

No firm timeline. No guarantees. But clear evidence Arsenal expect their defensive linchpin back in the first half of the season.
