Carrick Ready to Make Dorgu United’s New Left-Back

Manchester United might have found their left-back solution without spending another penny.

With the transfer window shut and late moves for Alejandro Balde and Rayan Ait-Nouri falling flat, Michael Carrick is staring at a depth problem on the left side of his defence. Luke Shaw stands alone as the only recognised left-back in the squad. Behind him? A patchwork of possibilities.

One of those is Patrick Dorgu. And Carrick sounds ready to lean in.

The United boss described the 21-year-old as “almost like a new signing” after his return from a long-term hamstring injury, hinting strongly that a change of role could be on the cards.

“He can certainly play there. He has done, without doubt,” Carrick said when asked about Dorgu at left-back. “I’m not sitting here saying he can’t do that. It’s just the way we’ve been since I’ve been here.”

From winger to full-back?

Dorgu has largely been used high up the pitch under Carrick. He has started four times for United’s head coach, all on the wing, and opened this season on the flank at Hull City before dropping to the bench for the win over Ipswich.

Before that, Ruben Amorim had trusted him as a wing-back. Go back another step and the story changes again: when United paid £25million to take him from Lecce in January 2025, he was playing as a conventional left-back in Serie A.

Now that history suddenly matters.

With no specialist cover for Shaw, Carrick is weighing up a reshuffle. Dorgu sits among the leading candidates, alongside makeshift options such as Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, both comfortable on either side but not natural left-backs.

Carrick’s language suggests Dorgu is more than just an emergency plug-in.

“He actually has been injured, unfortunately, for some time,” Carrick said. “You could almost argue that he played three or four times for us last season, so for me, he’s almost like a new player, you know, to have, and it’s almost like a new signing in some ways because he’s added so much to the group.”

Versatility that United suddenly need

Dorgu has caught the eye as a left-winger for United. For Denmark, he has shown another side again, operating off the right and scoring a standout goal from that position during the June internationals.

That range is exactly what appeals to Carrick in a season where squad balance already looks fragile.

“He’s played off the right for Denmark, scored a great goal in the summer playing off the right in a forward position,” Carrick said. “He can play left-back. He’s that type where he can do a number of things. I’m certainly not saying he can’t do that at all.”

United are well stocked with wide players. They are not well stocked at full-back. The equation almost writes itself.

“It’s something he can, we just haven’t had to explore that,” Carrick continued. “At some point, we might have to, at some point he might do that. He can do that, absolutely no problem. There are times in training when he does it.”

A young player, a big opportunity

For Dorgu, this could be the moment that defines his United career. Still only 21, he has the athleticism and technical quality to operate up and down the flank. Carrick’s challenge is to sharpen those tools in the right area of the pitch.

“And then he’s only young, being such a young age and having the attributes that he’s got, we’ve just got to keep trying to get the most out of him,” Carrick said.

United went into deadline week hunting a left-back. They came out of it with none.

If Dorgu does step back into defence and makes the role his own, the question will be simple: did Carrick just lose out in the market, or did he quietly uncover the answer in his own dressing room?
