Ederson’s World Cup Call Delays Manchester United Transfer
Manchester United’s first major signing of the Michael Carrick era is on the way – but not quite on time.
Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who has agreed a move to Old Trafford for an initial £35 million, has been drafted late into Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a twist that threatens to slow the final stages of his transfer and delay his arrival for pre-season.
The 26-year-old had been left out of the original Selecao list, only to receive a call after Roma right-back Wesley suffered injury. One door closed, another opened. Ederson will now join up with Brazil in North America, stepping back onto the international stage after a brief hiatus. He has three caps to his name, but none since 2025.
For United, the timing is awkward but hardly disastrous. The deal with Atalanta is agreed, the plan is clear: Ederson will become Carrick’s first signing as permanent manager, a key piece in the rebuild of the club’s midfield following Casemiro’s departure from Old Trafford. A new anchor for a new regime.
United want the transfer wrapped up as soon as possible, yet the World Cup inevitably reshapes schedules. Medicals, media duties, integration into Carrick’s plans – all of that now has to work around Brazil’s tournament run. The club will sign him now, then wait. The real work starts after he returns.
His call-up also swells United’s presence at the World Cup. The club already have 12 players heading to the tournament; Ederson’s expected confirmation would push that number to 13, a sizeable block of the squad scattered across North America in the middle of a crucial summer.
For Carrick, it cuts both ways. He gains a midfielder arriving battle-hardened from a World Cup, but loses precious early weeks on the training ground with a cornerstone of his new side. How quickly Ederson adapts when he finally walks through the doors at Carrington could say plenty about how fast this new United project can truly move.
