Christos Tzolis: Arsenal's New Winger Making Waves

Arsenal’s new wide man Christos Tzolis is barely a month into his Premier League career, yet the noise around him is already deafening – and not just in north London.

The 24-year-old Greece international arrived from Club Brugge in July in a £34m deal, signing a long-term contract at the Emirates after Mikel Arteta reshaped his forward line by sanctioning Leandro Trossard’s exit and putting Gabriel Martinelli up for sale. It was a bold call. So far, it looks like a calculated one.

Tzolis has walked straight into a title-winning dressing room and started like he belongs there. He has helped the Premier League champions open their defence with four wins from four, setting the tone ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Napoli. The staff at London Colney have seen enough already to start talking him up – loudly.

Sporting director Andrea Berta was the first to nail his colours to the mast when the deal went through, backing Tzolis to “raise the technical level of our squad” and bring a “strong mentality to our team”. That internal conviction has only grown.

At last month’s Champions League draw in Monaco, senior Arsenal figures bumped into their counterparts from Club Brugge and wasted no time in delivering their verdict on the £34m signing.

Bart Verhaeghe, president of the Belgian club, says the praise was relentless.

“At the Champions League draw, I saw people from Arsenal and they showed a tremendous amount of respect,” Verhaeghe told Het Belang van Limburg. “ ‘What a player you’ve delivered,’ they told me. They said he has an excellent attitude, is the best in the physical tests and is a great guy, too.”

The compliments did not stop there. Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Verhaeghe repeated the message he had heard from the Premier League champions.

“Arsenal said ‘what a player’ when they approached me after the draw,” he explained. “Christos had come out on top in all the tests. That’s what we do here: deliver a ready-made product. Because we know what those top teams are looking for. We prepare our players for that kind of football.”

Brugge’s blueprint pays off

For Verhaeghe, Tzolis is not just a transfer success; he is proof of concept. Club Brugge have spent years fine-tuning a holistic model that was once mocked and is now being copied.

“Back then, people laughed at our holistic approach to nutrition, sleep, special glasses… Today, it’s all standard practice. We were the innovators from day one, and we’ll keep innovating,” he said.

The Belgian champions now see Tzolis as another milestone in their evolution.

“Today, we’re selling players to Arsenal and Inter Milan, two teams that have reached the Champions League final in the last two years,” Verhaeghe added. “And at the same time, we’re recruiting directly from the Premier League, from a club like West Ham. 10 years ago, that was unthinkable.”

From being early adopters of marginal gains to becoming a trusted supplier for Europe’s elite, Brugge’s pathway is written into every compliment Arsenal pay their former winger.

“Beating everyone” at Arsenal

Inside the Arsenal camp, the numbers behind the hype are turning heads. Ben White lifted the lid on Tzolis’ impact during pre-season, and his words matched Verhaeghe’s.

“Christos has been amazing,” the England defender said. “He came in, did all the testing, and beat everyone. So he is fitting in really well and everyone is really happy for him to be here.”

When a new signing walks into a champion squad and tops the physical data, players notice. Coaches notice. Opponents will soon have to.

Ferdinand’s bold call

Outside the club, the early impressions are just as strong. Rio Ferdinand has already nailed his colours to the mast and is willing to stick his neck out on the winger’s potential.

“Who is the best signing of the transfer window? From what I’ve seen so far, I’m going to go for Tzolis,” the former Manchester United defender said on his YouTube channel.

“For the price you got him for, £35m, from what I’ve seen, jinky little winger, great vision, making good decisions in the final third.

“I think, great bit of business done by the recruitment team at Arsenal. I’m going to go early, I’m going to say he’s going to be my signing of the season, as in terms of value, and in terms of what he does.”

It is a big shout this early in the campaign. But it underlines the scale of the impression Tzolis has already made.

Arsenal wanted a winger who could lift their technical level, match their physical standards and handle the pressure of a title defence and a Champions League tilt. The tests say he is ready. The coaches say he is ready. The question now is simple: how far can he push this team in the months ahead?
