Chelsea’s midfield has become the early fault line of Xabi Alonso’s reign. Enzo Fernandez walked out on deadline day, no replacement came through the door, and every question at Cobham on Friday seemed to circle back to the same worry: are they light in the middle of the pitch?

Alonso didn’t flinch.

The new head coach leaned into the resources he already has, pushing back on the idea that Chelsea are suddenly exposed in the heart of the team.

James and Gusto, full-backs by trade but trusted by Alonso as flexible options who can step inside and help build the game.

But the room really stirred when the conversation moved away from the established names.

The most eye-catching moment for many fans came when Alonso reached for two teenagers who, until this summer, barely registered beyond academy circles: Reggie Watson and Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli.

“Watson and Mahdi from the academy [can play]. We have options, quality and competitiveness.”

Sixteen years old. Both of them. Both fresh from an eye-opening pre-season in which they refused to be overawed by senior company. Jakarta, the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, a pre-season meeting with AC Milan – those were the first glimpses of Watson in particular, battling for the ball and showing he belonged in elite surroundings.

No one at Cobham expects them to start week in, week out. Alonso doesn’t either. This is not a sudden fast-track to the first XI.

What it does show is the manager’s willingness to stretch his depth chart down into the academy rather than demand a quick fix from the market. If injuries pile up or suspensions bite, he has already planted the idea that Watson and Nicoll-Jazuli are not just names on a youth team sheet but genuine emergency options.

For a club that has spent heavily and often, the message is a little different this time. Enzo Fernandez is gone. The replacement, at least for now, is not a new signing but a blend of versatility, experience, and youthful nerve.

If Alonso is right, Chelsea’s midfield won’t just survive the loss. It might end up reshaped by the kids waiting just behind the curtain.
