BVB Faces Challenge as Konstantelias Sustains Cruciate Tear

Borussia Dortmund’s season had barely started when the first major blow landed.

Giannis Konstantelias, the 23-year-old Greek playmaker signed only weeks ago from PAOK Saloniki for 26 million euros, has torn his cruciate ligament. The injury came in the 2-0 opening-day win over Hamburger SV, and it will sideline him for “several months”. For a club that had just reshaped its attack around his profile, the timing could hardly be worse.

On their official account on X, the Bundesliga runners-up sent a clear message: “The entire BVB family is behind you, Giannis! You will come back stronger!” Sporting managing director Lars Ricken struck a similar note, but didn’t hide the impact.

This news hits us hard, because Giannis has already shown in a very short space of time why we see him as a great player for Borussia Dortmund,” Ricken said. “For now, however, his and our focus is first and foremost on his recovery. Giannis has our full support in that.

The frustration is obvious. Konstantelias had just delivered a dream Bundesliga debut, scoring and immediately hinting at why Dortmund pushed so hard to get him. Early in the second half, though, he twisted his knee in what looked like a harmless challenge. He walked off after lengthy treatment, but the expressions on the faces of player and staff told the real story. Optimism drained away long before the scan confirmed the worst.

Transfer clock ticking

Now comes the brutal, practical question: how do BVB replace him?

The calendar offers no mercy. The summer transfer window closes on Tuesday, 1 September, at 8pm. Those in charge at Dortmund will be scrambling through every scenario until the final minutes.

Ricken had already hinted at a busy few days on Saturday evening, when the full extent of the injury was still unclear. “Depending on how serious the injury actually is, we will shape our next steps accordingly. One thing is certain, though: we won’t be doing nothing over the next three days.”

Doing nothing is no longer an option. Konstantelias was signed to be a difference-maker between the lines, a player who can unpick deep blocks, accelerate from a standing start and change the rhythm of a game in a single movement. That profile is not easy to find on short notice.

Internal fix or transfer twist?

One answer might already be in the dressing room.

Fabio Silva, currently very unhappy with his role and repeatedly linked with a quick departure after just one season at Dortmund, suddenly looks far more important. The injury to Konstantelias has likely slammed the door on any immediate exit. Instead of packing his bags, the Portuguese forward could be handed a route back into the rotation, perhaps even a chance to reinvent himself in a slightly different role.

But the conversation in Dortmund rarely stays internal for long. Not when one familiar name keeps circling.

Jadon Sancho, still without a club, could once again move from background noise to genuine option. The Englishman fits the template: a natural solution for the right flank or half-spaces, a player who, like Konstantelias and Konstantinos Karetsas, can generate dynamism from a standing start and beat defenders in tight areas.

Sancho on a free – bargain or gamble?

Speculation over yet another Sancho return never fully disappeared. It quietened after the arrivals of Karetsas and Konstantelias, but it never truly died.

At Dortmund, Sancho played the best football of his career. He was one of Europe’s most dangerous wide players, a constant source of goals and assists, a fan favourite who thrived in the Yellow Wall’s glare. Now 26, he finds himself without a club after his contract at Manchester United expired. On paper, he is available on a free transfer.

That makes the move financially low-risk for BVB. No fee, familiar environment, a system he knows, a fan base that once adored him. The catch is obvious: the salary. Sancho would have to accept a significant pay cut to make a third spell at Borussia realistic.

There is also the sporting question Dortmund cannot ignore. Can the former super talent still reach his old level? His recent loan spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa were largely disappointing, a far cry from the electric winger who once tore up Bundesliga defences.

So Dortmund stand at a crossroads: trust what they already have and ride out months without Konstantelias, or roll the dice on a player whose past in black and yellow was glorious, but whose present is full of question marks.
