Arsenal Eyes Julián Álvarez as Barcelona Deal Falls Through

Julián Álvarez is running out of exits. With five days left in the window, the Atlético Madrid striker has effectively one escape route: Arsenal. Barcelona, the move he wants most, has been shut down in brutal fashion.

According to Marca, Atlético’s position could not be clearer. Internally, the message is blunt: the chances of selling Álvarez to Barcelona are “zero”. Not low. Not complicated. Zero.

Álvarez, though, has not given up on Catalonia. He has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, clinging to the hope that something breaks in his favour and that a late path to Barça somehow opens.

Joan Laporta had publicly vowed that Barcelona would keep pushing until deadline day. That only hardened Atlético’s resolve. The board released a statement backing the decision not to negotiate with the Catalans, and the already delicate relationship between the two clubs has grown even more strained.

With Barcelona out of the equation, Atlético are listening to offers from abroad – but only on their terms. The asking price is set at 150 million euros. His standing at the Metropolitano has looked fragile since the stormy scenes against Villarreal, when sections of the home crowd jeered him and he left the pitch to walk alone down the tunnel.

Into that tension steps Arsenal.

The Premier League side now look like the most realistic destination. They have shown strong interest and Álvarez is attracted by the sporting project in north London. On the football side, the move makes sense for all three parties.

Off the pitch, it is far messier.

Álvarez’s family live with him in Spain, and any move would mean uprooting them again. Post‑Brexit British immigration rules are stricter than during his previous spell in England, and some of his relatives’ residence permits have expired. That turns what would normally be a routine relocation into a legal and bureaucratic maze.

His wife’s situation is more straightforward. As journalist Verónica Brunati has detailed, she can obtain residency as the dependent partner of a worker with a valid visa, which would allow her to live with him legally in the United Kingdom.

Arsenal believe they can navigate that maze. At the Emirates they are confident they can resolve the visa and residency issues for Álvarez’s family if he gives the green light to the move.

For now, though, there is no decisive offer on Atlético’s table. Arsenal are working, watching, weighing their moment. Atlético are waiting for someone to hit the 150 million mark. And Álvarez, caught between his Barcelona dream and a London opportunity, is running out of time before 1 September decides his future for him.
