Barcelona's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez Hits Major Wall
Barcelona’s pursuit of a new No. 9 has hit its first major wall of the summer.
The champions of Spain, who have already set their sights on Manchester City midfielder Rodri, have now all but abandoned hope of prising Julian Alvarez away from Atletico Madrid. What began as an ambitious, headline-grabbing chase has run straight into a brick wall of resistance at the Metropolitano.
Atletico stand firm, Barcelona back off
Barcelona made Alvarez their priority to succeed Robert Lewandowski, identifying the 26-year-old as the ideal long-term reference point in attack. They tested Atletico’s resolve with a €100 million offer.
It was rejected out of hand.
Los Colchoneros did not entertain the idea. No negotiations, no counter-proposals, no softening of language. Just a clear message: Alvarez is not for sale.
According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, the mood inside Barcelona has shifted from optimism to resignation. The deal is now being described within the club as “impossible”, and privately the Alvarez operation is being treated as a lost cause.
That stance from Atletico has not wavered all summer. Barcelona pushed. Alvarez, for his part, has already expressed his desire to leave. The ingredients for a transfer saga were all there: a willing player, a determined buyer, big money on the table.
Still, Atletico have not moved an inch.
Deco even took the train to Madrid this week, trying to find a crack in the wall. The sporting director met with Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in an effort to reopen a door that Atletico kept slamming shut.
There was even the suggestion that when Alvarez returns to training next week, he could again insist on leaving, hoping that direct pressure from the player might finally shift the club’s position.
It hasn’t. Not yet, and maybe not at all.
The Rojiblancos remain adamant. No sale, no matter the insistence from Barcelona or the restlessness of the player. Faced with that reality, Barcelona have started to accept what the market is telling them: this chase is effectively over.
A shrinking list of alternatives
With Alvarez slipping away, the search for a new centre-forward is back to square one. And the market is not exactly opening its arms to Barcelona.
Some of the backup plans have already vanished.
- Joao Pedro is set to commit his future to Chelsea with a new contract, closing off one of the more realistic, younger options.
- Eli Junior Kroupi, another name on the list, is sidelined for months with injury, removing him from any immediate equation.
- Fisnik Asllani is heading to RB Leipzig, another target gone before talks could truly heat up.
The pool is getting smaller, the need remains the same.
Dusan Vlahovic is one name that refuses to go away. Now a free agent after leaving Juventus, the Serbian striker has been waiting for Barcelona to make a move. His camp is ready, his future open, while Besiktas push hard to bring him in. If Barcelona want him, they know they cannot wait forever.
There is also the looming figure of Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian’s profile is as high as his price tag, but his services have been formally offered to the club. Whether Barcelona can turn that into a concrete, financially viable operation is another question entirely.
For now, the picture is clear: Alvarez was the chosen one, and Atletico have shut that door. Barcelona must now find their next Lewandowski in a market that is tightening by the day.
Who they turn to next will say a lot about the club’s ambition – and about how much room they really have to manoeuvre in a summer that is starting to feel more complicated than planned.
