Barcelona’s chase for Julian Alvarez is not dead. It might just be on pause.

The Atletico Madrid striker, long admired at Camp Nou, could be back on Barça’s radar in January, with people close to the player increasingly sensing that the situation in Madrid may not hold for the whole season.

Cracks in Atletico’s hard line

El Chiringuito TV report that Alvarez’s camp believe his position at Atletico could become “untenable” as the campaign unfolds, a word that cuts straight through the club’s public stance.

All summer, Atletico were adamant. Alvarez was not for sale. Internally, they treated the matter as closed well before the window shut, confident that the noise around Barcelona would die away and the Argentine would simply settle in as a key piece of Diego Simeone’s plans.

That hasn’t happened. The speculation hasn’t gone away. It lingers over the Metropolitano, matchday after matchday, a story that refuses to leave the back pages.

Atletico know it. They also know that, whether Alvarez stays or eventually leaves, his name will keep surfacing every time Barcelona are mentioned in the same breath as a No.9.

Barcelona’s No.9 question won’t go away

For Barcelona, the logic is clear.

Alvarez was identified as the preferred option to lead the line, the ideal profile to reinforce the centre-forward role. The fact they failed to land him in the summer has not altered that internal assessment.

They pivoted to Gabriel Jesus, a significant move that gave them another high-level forward. But that signing did not close the Alvarez chapter. It just pushed it into the background.

Inside the club, there is still room for a major deal. Barcelona are understood to have around €60 million of Financial Fair Play margin available, enough to at least explore another heavyweight operation when the winter market opens.

The question is not whether they like Alvarez. It’s whether the conditions finally fall into place.

A possible shift in power

That is where Atletico’s position becomes decisive.

Up to now, Barcelona have been trying to prise away a player from a club with zero intention of selling. Every approach ran into the same wall: a flat refusal in Madrid.

But if Alvarez’s entourage are right and the situation at Atletico sours over the season, the dynamic could flip.

Instead of Barça knocking on Atletico’s door, it could be Atletico testing the waters in Barcelona, gauging whether a deal is possible and on what terms. That would drag the negotiation into a completely different territory, both financially and politically.

New intermediaries with ties to both clubs are also expected to move into the frame if that scenario unfolds, adding fresh channels of communication and potentially smoothing a path that was blocked all summer.

For now, it’s just that: a scenario, not a concrete transfer plan.

But January is not far away. And if the pressure around Julian Alvarez keeps building in Madrid, Barcelona might find the door they couldn’t open in August suddenly left on the latch.
