Barcelona Renew Interest in Julian Alvarez for January Move

Barcelona refuse to give up on Julian Alvarez. They have simply changed the timetable.

The Catalan club failed with their summer push to lure the Argentine away from Atletico Madrid, but, as reported by SPORT, that setback has only delayed their plans. The idea inside the club is clear: go again in January.

Atletico shut the door in the last window. They would not sit down to negotiate, Alvarez stayed at the Metropolitano, and Barcelona backed off rather than try to force a move that was never really on the table. What did not change was their conviction about the player.

That stance is underlined by how Barça view Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian’s arrival is not being treated as the end of the Alvarez story. Jesus has been signed to plug an immediate gap in attack, a short-to-medium term solution for Hansi Flick as he reshapes the forward line.

Inside the sporting department, Alvarez is filed in a different category: a market opportunity they do not want to lose track of.

So Jesus does not close the door. He might not even narrow it. Barcelona believe they can still justify another major investment up front if the right opening appears, and Alvarez remains the name at the top of that list.

The numbers help. According to the report, Barça could have around €65–70 million of financial fair play margin available in January. That gives them room to manoeuvre, a cushion that would allow them to revisit the Alvarez operation if Atletico’s stance softens.

That same margin could be diverted elsewhere, particularly at centre-back, if Flick decides the defence needs urgent surgery. But for now, every internal conversation keeps circling back to the same conclusion: Alvarez is the priority.

A stormy spell ahead for Alvarez

On the other side of the equation, the picture is far less comfortable.

Alvarez chose to stay at Atletico Madrid in the summer, yet his bond with the club’s supporters has already taken damage. The saga around Barcelona’s interest has left a mark, and the Metropolitano is not guaranteed to be a forgiving stage when he steps out there again.

There has even been talk around the club of Atletico asking the forward to apologise publicly to the fans and to change his agent after what unfolded in the last window. For the moment, neither demand looks close to becoming reality, but the fact such ideas surfaced at all shows how delicate the situation has become.

The clock is now ticking loudly. Alvarez has roughly four months to reset the narrative before January arrives and Barcelona come calling again.

His performances will matter. So will his day-to-day relationship with Diego Simeone. Just as important will be how the Atletico crowd responds: whistles or applause, patience or rejection.

All of that will shape the landscape when the winter window opens. And when Barcelona knock again, the question will not just be how much they are willing to pay – but what kind of Julian Alvarez they are actually walking into.
