Atsuki Ito Signs for Bolton Wanderers: Belgium-to-Championship Move

Atsuki Ito has ended his Gent spell and signed for Bolton Wanderers, becoming the first to make the Belgium-to-Championship jump that many expected Max Dean to complete before the window shuts.

Ito arrives in England with a reputation that never quite ignited in Belgium. When Gent brought him in from Urawa Red Diamonds in 2024, the feeling was that they had secured a ready-made replacement for influential midfielder Hyun-Seok Hong. On paper, it made sense. Four seasons in the J League with Urawa had produced 19 goals and 15 assists from central midfield – serious numbers for a player operating in the engine room.

The reality at Gent never fully matched the promise.

His first campaign was solid rather than spectacular. Ito featured heavily, playing 46 games across all competitions, but the end product was modest: two goals and one assist. He moved the ball neatly, pressed intelligently, but never quite grabbed games in the way many had expected when he arrived.

Ironically, his output improved just as his influence in the squad began to fade. Last season, Ito’s minutes dropped, yet he still managed five goals and three assists in 33 appearances. The numbers hinted at a player adjusting and growing, but the hierarchy of the midfield had shifted around him.

Coaching Preferences

Rik De Mil’s preferences were clear. The Gent head coach built his central unit around Leandro Lopes as the holding midfielder, with Matias Delorge trusted alongside him when fit. Higher up the pitch, Abdelkahar Kadri became the go-to option in the more advanced central role. Ito, capable of operating deep or further forward, found himself used as cover rather than cornerstone, never truly locking down a defined position.

That versatility, which counted against him in a settled Gent side, could prove a major asset at Bolton. He can anchor play from deep, link phases in a box-to-box role, or push on to support the forwards. Two seasons in Belgian football have also toughened him up for the physical demands he will face in the Championship.

Ito leaves Gent as a player who showed flashes rather than a sustained peak. Bolton are betting that a new league, a new rhythm, and a clearer role can unlock the version of Atsuki Ito that once drove Urawa’s midfield and filled stat sheets in the J League. Now he has to prove that promise still travels.
