Anthony Martial's Málaga Move: A Career Revival in LaLiga

Anthony Martial could be about to revive his career in Spain, with Málaga pushing to bring the French forward to LaLiga.

According to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, the Andalusian club are in “advanced negotiations” with the 30-year-old, who has been without a team for two months since his contract with CF Monterrey was terminated.

“Málaga are in advanced negotiations with Anthony Martial,” Aouna posted on X. “Talks between the two parties are progressing and an agreement is close.”

For Martial, it would be a return to Spanish football and to a major European league at a time when his career hangs in the balance. For Málaga, freshly promoted and already under pressure, it would be a gamble on a name that once lit up the continent.

Málaga’s need, Martial’s last big chance?

Málaga climbed back into LaLiga in the summer but the step up has bitten hard. Three games in, three points on the board, and 18th place in the table underline the fragility of their position. They need goals. They need experience. They need a spark.

Martial once offered exactly that. A phenomenon at AS Monaco, he exploded onto the scene as a teenager and earned a blockbuster move to Manchester United, who paid at least €60 million to prise him away from the principality. His early months at Old Trafford hinted at a superstar in the making.

That version of Martial feels a long time ago.

His development slowed, then stalled. A loan move to Sevilla failed to reignite him. In 2024, with Martial injured and his deal running down, Manchester United terminated his contract, drawing a line under a spell that promised far more than it delivered.

He did not disappear. He searched.

A few months later, he signed for AEK Athens and briefly looked reborn, scoring nine goals for the Greek side. Even there, though, the relationship cooled quickly and the club moved on. Next came Mexico and CF Monterrey, a left-field switch that also failed to stick.

The Mexican club had tied him down until mid-2027, but the contract was cut short in July for reasons that have not been made clear. Martial left after 20 appearances, with one goal and three assists to his name.

Two months later, he is a free agent fighting to stay relevant at the top level.

A career on the edge

Thirty caps for France. A transfer fee that once put him among the most expensive teenagers in history. Highlights that still circulate on social media as reminders of what he can do when everything clicks.

Yet the reality is harsher. Martial now stands closer to the edge than to the peak.

That is what makes Málaga’s move so intriguing. They are not just signing a forward; they are betting on a redemption arc. A club trying to re-establish itself in LaLiga and a player trying to prove he still belongs there.

Negotiations, according to Aouna, are moving in the right direction. An agreement is described as “close”.

If the deal goes through, Martial will walk into a dressing room short on top-flight pedigree but full of urgency. Málaga need points. Martial needs minutes. Both need this to work.
