London City Lionesses Gear Up to Challenge WSL Hierarchy

For the second summer in a row, London City Lionesses have made impressive signings, fueling hopes they can upset the usual order atop the Women’s Super League. With stars like two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, England’s iconic goalkeeper Mary Earps, and four-time Champions League winner Mapi Leon joining their ranks, the club's ambition is undeniable, even if Champions League qualification might be out of reach.

A Rapid Transformation

Just over a year ago, London City was competing in the second tier. Now, at a pre-season media event, it was hard to forget their swift rise. The squad has undergone a major overhaul since promotion, with only eight players remaining from that team. Among them are goalkeepers Sophia Poor and Sophie Hillyerd, who have minimal appearances, and Saki Kumagai, who joined midway through the promotion season.

Strategic Summer Moves

This summer, the club has taken a more measured approach compared to last year’s frantic transfer window. Although there were eight new signings and ten departures, the team feels more settled. All incoming players were confirmed before July ended, avoiding last-minute chaos like the previous season.

Alanna Kennedy, one of last year's signings, told GOAL, "We’re better from last year’s experience and can help new players adapt quicker. Hopefully, this makes things smoother."

Implementing a Clear Vision

Since taking over halfway through last season, coach Eder Maestre has introduced a fresh playing style. The extended off-season has given him time to embed his tactics fully, leading to stronger team cohesion.

Vice-captain Danielle van de Donk said, "It’s been clear with lots of meetings and training sessions. We’ve played good games, and everything is coming together nicely."

Star-Studded Squad

The Lionesses’ roster now shines with top talent. Putellas leads the way, having recently helped Barcelona win a fourth Champions League title and possibly eyeing a third Ballon d’Or. Alongside her are wide players Kadidiatou Diani and Delphine Cascarino, both dangerous threats. Grace Geyoro looks to bounce back after a tough season, while Leon stands out as a world-class defender. Though Earps may not be at her peak, she still offers an upgrade in goal.

The squad also includes promising players like Nicole Anyomi, who contributed 19 goals or assists in the Bundesliga last season, and Freya Godfrey, a regular in Sarina Wiegman’s England side.

Maestre commented, "Having these players aligned with the same purpose and mentality will help us push against the best teams in the league."

The Champions League Question

If London City manages to break into the top three—positions usually dominated by Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City—a complex issue arises. Owner Michele Kang also controls Lyon, the eight-time European champions. UEFA rules prevent any individual or entity from influencing two clubs in the same competition, so even if London City qualifies, participation in the Women’s Champions League might be blocked.

Nadine Kessler, UEFA’s head of women’s football, stated in May, "No exceptions will be made to preserve sporting integrity." When asked about this, Maestre simply said, "Those decisions are not up to me."

Focus on the Pitch

Despite the buzz, the team remains grounded, concentrating on building chemistry and delivering results. Kennedy summed it up: "We focus on details, understanding Eder’s demands, and building relationships both on and off the pitch."

The Lionesses open their season against Manchester United this Friday night, a match that will offer the first glimpse of their potential. Putellas shared her mindset plainly: "I don’t set expectations. I want our hard work during pre-season and the season to speak for itself. I aim to win every game but without expectations."

All signs point to London City Lionesses as the most intriguing WSL team this season.
