Youri Tielemans Waits for Manchester United Debut

Youri Tielemans will have to wait.

Manchester United’s £35m summer signing from Aston Villa is not involved as Michael Carrick’s side face Atletico Madrid this afternoon, with the Belgian midfielder left out of the travelling squad after only just linking up with his new team-mates.

Tielemans, who took a short break following his World Cup exertions, has finally reported for duty at Carrington this week. The club want him fully integrated and up to speed before exposing him to game time, so his debut will be pushed back to one of United’s remaining friendlies.

Carrick shows his hand at the back

While Tielemans sits this one out, Carrick is showing far less caution with his defensive plans.

Rather than cycling through entire XIs between games, the United manager has resisted the urge to tinker heavily with the side that featured against Wrexham and Rosenborg. The back four, in particular, looks like a statement.

Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw all start again and, at this stage of pre-season, that consistency feels deliberate. This is the unit Carrick appears ready to trust when the Premier League begins. Yoro’s composure, Maguire’s experience, Heaven’s athleticism and Shaw’s balance down the left give the back line a settled look that has often been missing in recent years.

Midfield blend and a familiar No10

In midfield, Carrick continues to experiment with structure rather than personnel.

Mason Mount drops into a deeper role alongside Andrey Santos at the base, a pairing that should offer both control in possession and energy without the ball. Mount’s ability to step out and press, matched with Santos’ bite and range of passing, gives United a double pivot that can quickly flip from cautious to aggressive.

That platform allows Shea Lacey to keep hold of the No10 role. The youngster has impressed with his movement and sharpness between the lines and is rewarded with another chance to operate as the creative hub behind the attack. His selection again, in a game of this calibre, underlines how highly Carrick rates his potential.

Out wide, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu provide the width. Mbeumo’s direct running and eye for goal contrast with Dorgu’s more elastic, touchline-hugging style, giving United different angles from either flank.

Up front, though, there is a notable absence. There is no Joshua Zirkzee leading the line, leaving Carrick to improvise in the central striking role and offering others the opportunity to stake a claim before the season begins.

Bench brimming with youth

If the starting XI leans towards what might become Carrick’s first-choice structure, the bench is a nod to the future.

Ethan Williams and Harry Amass are among the young talents waiting in reserve, both eager to build on their goalscoring cameos against Rosenborg. They know Atletico Madrid presents a sterner test, but also a bigger stage. One sharp contribution here could shift their standing in Carrick’s thinking for the months ahead.

For Tielemans, the wait goes on. For those already in Carrick’s plans, especially the youngsters on the fringes, this Atletico test is another chance to make sure that when the Belgian finally walks out in red, he joins a side that already feels settled, competitive and hard to dislodge.
