Youri Tielemans Awaiting Manchester United Debut

Youri Tielemans will have to wait.

Manchester United’s £35m summer signing from Aston Villa has not been included in the travelling squad to face Atletico Madrid this afternoon, delaying his first appearance in red by at least a few days.

The Belgian midfielder only recently reported back for duty after a post‑World Cup break and has just started working with his new team-mates at Carrington. United are taking no risks, keeping him in Manchester to build fitness and familiarity rather than throwing him straight into a high-intensity friendly.

Carrick sticks, not twists

While some managers rip up their line-ups between pre-season games, Michael Carrick has gone the other way. After outings against Wrexham and Rosenborg, he has resisted wholesale changes and continued to lean on his senior players, a clear hint at how he sees his Premier League XI taking shape.

That approach bodes well for Tielemans in the short term. Once ready, he looks primed to walk straight into the starting side rather than be eased in from the bench.

For now, though, he watches on.

Tielemans has been training alongside fellow Belgian Senne Lammens, another new face who has also stayed behind. With Lammens absent, Radek Vitek is expected to keep his place in goal.

Back four taking shape

Carrick appears to have settled on a first-choice defence. Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw are set to continue as the back four, building rhythm and understanding ahead of the new campaign.

In midfield, Mason Mount lines up alongside Andrey Santos at the base, a pairing designed to control possession and set the tempo. Their presence allows highly rated youngster Shea Lacey to remain in his preferred No10 role, operating between the lines.

Out wide, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu offer the width and running power, while Joshua Zirkzee leads the line as the central striker.

One player who will not feature again is Tyler Fredricson, whose departure to Lausanne-Sport was confirmed in midweek. Benjamin Sesko is still managing a shin injury and is unlikely to be involved.

Young bench, big ambitions

The starting XI may be close to full strength, but the bench carries a different kind of intrigue. A cluster of academy prospects are pushing hard for more minutes after catching the eye against Rosenborg.

Ethan Williams, Jacob Devaney and Harry Amass all found the net in that game and will be desperate to build on those cameos if Carrick turns to them again. Each appearance now is a small audition, a chance to nudge themselves into the manager’s thoughts before the real stuff begins.

Tielemans will not be part of this chapter, but his arrival already looms over the midfield picture. When he finally steps onto the pitch in United colours, the shape of this side could change quickly.
