Yael Trepy in Intensive Care After Swimming Pool Incident

Yael Trepy, the young French forward on Cagliari’s books, is in intensive care in Sassari after a serious incident in a swimming pool, the Serie A club have confirmed.

The 20-year-old, who broke into the first team last season, is being treated at a hospital in northern Sardinia. Cagliari said Trepy “is currently in intensive care at the hospital in Sassari,” stressing that the club is “in close contact with the medical staff and the player’s family”.

The club have drawn a firm line around the situation. “The club asks for privacy to be respected and will provide further updates as soon as possible,” their statement added, without offering any detail on how the incident unfolded.

Italian media reports say Trepy was rescued on Sunday in Porto Cervo, in northern Sardinia, after swallowing a large quantity of water in a swimming pool. Doctors then placed him in a medically induced coma, according to those reports.

For Cagliari, the news lands just days after Trepy’s latest appearance. He started in Friday’s 1-0 Coppa Italia win over Arezzo, playing 54 minutes before being substituted. It was another step in a rapid rise that began when he joined the club’s academy in 2022 from Paris-based Union Sportive Creteil.

Last season, Trepy made eight Serie A appearances, scoring once and hinting at the potential Cagliari hoped to polish. Now the focus, for club and family alike, rests entirely on a hospital ward in Sassari and a 20-year-old fighting to resume a career that had only just begun to open up.
