Juventus Signs Jhon Lucumí as New Defensive Cornerstone

Juventus have their new defensive cornerstone – and they paid decisively to get him.

The Turin giants have wrapped up the signing of Jhon Lucumí from Bologna in a deal worth an initial €18 million, with a further €2m tied to add-ons. The Colombian centre-back has signed a four-year contract worth €3m net per season, a clear statement that Juventus see him as a long-term leader at the back.

That progression convinced Bologna to bring him to Serie A in the summer of 2022. Over four seasons at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, he became a fixture in their backline, racking up 152 appearances in all competitions. Coaches trusted him, team-mates leaned on him, and he responded with reliability rather than headlines.

He even tasted Champions League football with the Rossoblù, scoring one of his two goals for the club on Europe’s biggest stage. Those nights hardened him, tested his positioning and composure against elite forwards, and helped shape the defender Juventus believe is now ready for a bigger platform.

Juventus captured that sentiment in their official announcement, hailing Lucumí as “a player at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate contribution to the team ahead of the 2026/27 season.” The welcome was rounded off with a simple line: “Welcome to Juventus, Jhon!”

Ready to marshal a new-look backline

There will be no easing-in period. With the move completed, Lucumí will go straight into tactical sessions with his new team-mates, tasked with absorbing the demands of a club that expects to challenge on every front.

The timing is tight but tantalising. Juventus open their 2026-27 Serie A campaign away to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23, a fixture already circled as Lucumí’s likely competitive debut. All signs point to him starting at the heart of a reshaped defence, expected not just to adapt, but to organise, to lead, to set the tone.
