Xabi Alonso rules Moises Caicedo out of Leeds clash as Chelsea vow not to “rush” star again
Chelsea will have to do without Moises Caicedo once more as Xabi Alonso shut down any hope of the midfielder featuring against Leeds in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
The Ecuador captain, who has endured a stuttering start to the season, is still not ready after suffering a setback in the dramatic 4-3 win over Brighton.
Caicedo missed Chelsea’s opening two league games against Fulham and Luton, then was eased back with a substitute appearance against Brighton. It lasted just 14 minutes. He signalled a problem, came off, and hasn’t played since.
He sat out Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, and Alonso later admitted Chelsea may have pushed him back too quickly.
After that loss at the Emirates, the Chelsea head coach was clear: he did not want to repeat the “same mistake again” with one of his key players.
He had already hinted at concern straight after the Brighton game, saying Caicedo “was cautious to stop, to say that his feeling was not the best. We need to assess during the week that it wasn't something else.”
The latest update leaves no room for doubt.
Asked on Tuesday if Caicedo was fit to face Leeds, Alonso replied: “No. Not yet. Still not ready to go. Not the moment to take a too-early risk. We go game by game with them. It's too early.”
The focus now turns to Hull. Could Caicedo be back in time for that one?
“Potentially, yes,” Alonso said. “But we need to wait and probably Thursday or Friday we will know more.”
There is better news elsewhere in the squad. Levi Colwill is available again, giving Chelsea a timely defensive boost. Marco Palestra, though, remains sidelined.
Alonso was keen to underline how big a blow Palestra’s absence has been.
“Especially for (Palestra). He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the PL. He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”
Chelsea will also be without Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha for the Leeds tie, both ruled out of contention.
Leeds arrive at Stamford Bridge with far fewer concerns. They carry what is close to a clean bill of health, with only Daniel James a doubt as he battles to shake off persistent back and hamstring issues ahead of kick-off.
For Alonso and Chelsea, the message is clear: no shortcuts with Caicedo this time. The question now is whether that patience pays off when the fixtures start to pile up.
