Flu Keeps Andriy Lunin Out of Real Madrid's Squad for Inter Clash

Real Madrid will start their new Champions League campaign without Andriy Lunin.

The Ukrainian goalkeeper has been left out of José Mourinho’s squad for the opening group-stage match against Inter Milan, with the club confirming he is on the injured list after coming down with the flu. He also missed the first team’s training session the day before the game.

Mourinho will travel with three goalkeepers: undisputed No. 1 Thibaut Courtois and Spanish duo Sergio Mestre and Javi Navarro as his backups. Neither of Courtois’s understudies has played a single minute this season.

For Lunin, the setback comes at an awkward time. Last season he featured in 12 matches for Real Madrid, conceding 21 goals and recording just one clean sheet. Now, as the new European campaign kicks off, his immediate return date remains unclear.

Real Madrid’s decision and Lunin’s absence were reported via the club’s press service.
