Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez's Involvement Against Luton in Carabao Cup

Xabi Alonso insists Enzo Fernandez will be part of Chelsea’s plans against Luton in the Carabao Cup, even as Manchester City circle with growing intent.

The midfielder, who has made clear he wants to leave Stamford Bridge, is expected to feature on Thursday night despite the noise around his future and the increasingly likely prospect of a formal City bid before the September 1 deadline.

“Yes, so we expect that he's involved,” Alonso said when asked if Fernandez would play. “He has trained, he's training really well, he's a good professional and he will be involved.”

The words were calm. The backdrop is anything but.

Fernandez came off the bench in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday and walked into a divided reception: boos from some corners, loud support from others. It summed up the uneasy stand-off between a player who wants out and a fanbase unsure how to feel about it.

Yet on the training pitch, Alonso says there has been no drop in standards. Fernandez continues to work as normal while City’s interest, driven by head coach Enzo Maresca, gathers pace. Maresca knows the Argentine well from their time together at Chelsea and is pushing hard for a reunion.

Chelsea, though, still have games to win and a squad to manage.

Asked bluntly if he wants to keep Fernandez, Alonso did not hide his admiration, but stopped short of any guarantees.

“We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities. He has shown it and we have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop.”

The message was clear: Chelsea will lean on him while they still can.

What remains less clear is the club’s stance on replacements. Would Fernandez only be sold if an understudy or successor is lined up? Alonso refused to be pinned down.

“It is always about understanding the context, the situation, timings, circumstances, so there is not a defined rule for everything,” the Spaniard said. “You need to know how things have worked, what you want, what you want for the future, so I don't have the rules in stone. We need to assess each situation.”

So Fernandez stays in the squad, for now. City prepare their move. Stamford Bridge braces itself.
