Ebbsfleet United Faces Expulsion Threat as Suspension Extended

Ebbsfleet United have been pushed closer to the brink after the National League extended the club’s suspension, leaving their place in the competition hanging by a thread.

The Kent side had already seen their first three National League South fixtures wiped from the schedule earlier this month because of mounting financial problems. Hopes of a quick resolution have now faded.

In a statement on Wednesday, the National League confirmed that its compliance and licensing committee had reviewed the situation and found “no significant change” in the club’s position.

“The club has been given time and opportunity to demonstrate compliance with the league's rules and regulations, but matters cannot continue as has been the case,” the league said.

The warning could hardly be clearer. Among the sanctions available under league rules is the ultimate punishment: expulsion from the National League.

“The range of actions under rules and regulations include the potential for expulsion from the National League,” the statement continued. “The club is aware that such action is an option, and that it is entirely a matter for the club to satisfy the committee under the rules and regulations, and to remove such as an outcome.”

At the heart of the crisis is Ebbsfleet’s debt to HM Revenue and Customs. A winding-up petition remains active, and with it serious doubt over whether the club has the financial strength to see out the season.

The extended suspension now wipes two more fixtures from their calendar. The away trip to Farnborough Town on 29 August is off, as is the home game against Horsham two days later.

Time, though, has not completely run out. Ebbsfleet have been given until 5pm on 1 September to submit any further information to the National League. Only then will the committee sit again and decide whether this is a temporary crisis – or the beginning of the end for the club’s National League status.
