World Cup Yellow Card Tracker: Players at Risk of Suspension in Knockout Rounds
Players Facing Suspension Due to Yellow Cards in World Cup Knockouts
Accumulating yellow cards during the World Cup can seriously harm a team's chances. Getting two yellows in close matches leads to a one-game suspension, which could be costly in the knockout stages.
For the 2026 World Cup, FIFA introduced a new system with the expanded 48-team format. After the group stage, all players' yellow card counts were wiped clean before the Round of 32 began. This reset means any yellow cards earned earlier don't carry over into the knockouts. Another reset will happen after the quarterfinals, so cards won’t affect players in the semifinals or final due to accumulation.
That said, if a player picks up a second yellow between the Round of 32 and quarterfinals, they face suspension for the following match. This has placed some players on thin ice heading into critical knockout games.
Understanding Yellow Card Rules at the 2026 World Cup
Yellow cards are given for various fouls including repeated offenses, stopping attacks deliberately, wasting time, or simulation. Two yellows in one game lead to a red card and an automatic suspension for the next match. Straight red cards usually bring the same one-match ban but can result in longer suspensions depending on the offense.
Previously, single yellow cards from the group stage stayed with players until the quarterfinals, sometimes causing suspensions well into the tournament. Now, thanks to the resets after the group stage and again after the quarterfinals, players start those rounds without any bookings counted against them.
New dismissal rules allow referees to send off players who cover their mouths during confrontations or who leave the field to protest decisions. VAR also plays a bigger role by correcting mistaken send-offs like wrongful second yellows or red cards.
Can Players Miss Quarterfinal Matches Because of Yellow Cards?
Yes, but the reset rule limits this risk. If a player gets booked twice between the Round of 32 and quarterfinals, they sit out the quarterfinal. After the quarterfinals, the yellow card count resets again, so no one misses the semifinals or final solely due to yellow card accumulation.
Players carrying one yellow into the quarterfinal must be cautious—another booking there would mean suspension for the semifinals.
