Argentina Narrowly Escape Defeat; Switzerland Advance in World Cup Round of 16

Argentina's Dramatic Rally Keeps Their World Cup Hopes Alive

Argentina faced a daunting challenge after falling two goals behind Egypt in Atlanta. The reigning champions appeared on the brink of elimination but managed to overturn the deficit with a remarkable late surge to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Yasser Ibrahim gave Egypt an early shock by heading in from a corner in the 15th minute. Shortly after, Lionel Messi had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot following a foul on Nico Tagliafico, but Egypt’s goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a decisive save.

Egypt briefly believed they had doubled their advantage when Mostafa Ziko finished a swift counter-attack in the second half. However, VAR intervened to disallow the goal due to a foul on Lisandro Martinez at the play’s start. Ziko soon redeemed himself by scoring again on another counter-attack, this time with no disputes.

Until this point, Argentina had struggled to penetrate Egypt’s defense. Yet, in the final 20 minutes, they intensified their pressure. Cristian Romero reduced the deficit with a header from Messi’s cross in the 79th minute. Moments later, the veteran Messi struck powerfully on a loose ball, beating Shobeir to level the score.

As extra time loomed, Lautaro Martinez delivered a floating cross that Enzo Fernandez met perfectly with a header to complete the comeback. The emotional celebrations reflected the tension, with Messi visibly moved at the final whistle.

Argentina, expected to face easier opponents, have encountered tough resistance not only from Egypt but earlier from Cape Verde, producing unexpectedly thrilling matches.

Switzerland Advances Past Colombia After Penalty Shootout

The clash between Switzerland and Colombia in Vancouver lacked the intensity of Argentina's match, unfolding as a cautious contest where both sides seemed content to test their luck in penalties.

Colombia created more chances throughout regular and extra time, notably outshooting Switzerland 8-1 in the added period. Despite their efforts, failure to secure a winning goal during play proved costly.

The shootout began shakily for Colombia when Davinson Sanchez blasted his penalty onto the crossbar. Switzerland’s Manuel Akanji then missed his attempt by sending it over the bar. Juan Hernandez’s subsequent penalty was saved by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, while Cedric Itten and Luis Diaz exchanged successful kicks.

Ruben Vargas ultimately converted the decisive penalty, securing Switzerland’s place in the quarter-finals under Murat Yakin’s management.
