Aston Villa Signs Ibrahim Mbaye for €55m from PSG

Aston Villa have struck an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye, snatching the 18-year-old from under Liverpool’s nose.

The Senegal international is now set for the Premier League after a summer of shifting price tags and changing suitors. Liverpool had explored a move as they quietly lined up options in case they needed to replace Mohamed Salah, but PSG’s demands pushed them away.

The French champions quoted Liverpool a fee of around €70 million. There was a feeling that number could eventually come down, but the Anfield hierarchy chose not to get dragged into a long, draining negotiation. Instead, they threw their weight behind a deal for top target Bradley Barcola, leaving the Mbaye chase open.

Villa were ready.

Unai Emery’s side have tracked Mbaye for months and first tried to prise him away in January. PSG refused to sell then, convinced they could still carve out a bigger role for the teenager. That never truly materialised. After returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Mbaye saw his minutes shrink in the second half of the season, and the desire for a fresh start hardened.

This time, PSG relented.

Villa’s breakthrough

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have agreed a €55 million fee with PSG, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. That connection smoothed talks and allowed Villa to move decisively once Liverpool stepped aside.

Mbaye is now in the process of finalising a long-term contract with the Birmingham club. Villa view him not as a late opportunity, but as a long-standing cornerstone of their project. Scouts have followed him closely, and the club’s hierarchy see him as a major piece in Emery’s evolving attack.

For an 18-year-old, his résumé already stands out. Mbaye has made 42 senior appearances for PSG and featured for Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter before heading to the World Cup in the summer. Elite games, high-pressure stages, big expectations – he has already tasted most of it.

But not regularly enough. That is what drives this move.

Emery gets his winger

Emery wanted another winger to stretch games, to add pace and unpredictability to his front line. Mbaye fits that brief and, crucially, arrives at a moment when Villa needed clarity in the market.

The club had been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, but indications are that the Portuguese attacker has opted for Galatasaray instead, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal. That potential setback could have left Villa scrambling.

Instead, the agreement for Mbaye lands at exactly the right time.

Villa now look set to unveil one of Europe’s most coveted young wide players, a teenager leaving Paris in search of minutes and responsibility. The stage he craved is waiting in the Midlands. The only question now is how quickly he can turn promise into Premier League dominance.
