Travel Demands in the 2026 World Cup Knockouts: Colombia and Canada Face the Longest Journeys

2026 World Cup Knockout Travel Challenges

The 2026 World Cup, the largest ever with 48 teams hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, presents some unique travel hurdles. Matches are scattered across various stadiums approved by FIFA, but as the tournament advances, teams will have to cover greater distances during the knockout rounds.

While the group stage kept most teams confined to one region, the knockout phase offers no such guarantee. The paths teams take depend heavily on match outcomes, and some could face extensive flights if they progress far into the tournament.

Knockout Stage Distances: Who Will Travel the Most?

The venues for every knockout match were set before the tournament began, which means the traveling distances hinge on who wins each round. Here’s a look at how far some winners might have to go according to data from USA Today.

Key Travel Highlights by Round

The Round of 16 match between Colombia and Ghana, played in Kansas City, sends its winner on the longest trip of that stage: 1,572 miles to Vancouver for their next game against either Switzerland or Algeria.

In the quarterfinals, the longest flight belongs to the winner of the Houston game, where Canada, Morocco, or Netherlands could be involved. They must cover 1,592 miles to Boston.

The semifinals split teams between Dallas and Atlanta. One semifinalist travels 594 miles from Miami to Atlanta, but another has a hefty 1,549-mile journey from Boston to Dallas. The Los Angeles winner will also head to Dallas, flying 1,224 miles.

The final match requires a trip from Dallas to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, totaling 1,385 miles for one finalist. The other finalist comes from Atlanta.

Group Stage Travel Recap

Though FIFA aimed to keep teams geographically close during the group stage, some still clocked substantial miles. Bosnia and Herzegovina traveled the most, covering 3,144 miles across matches in Toronto, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

  • Algeria: 2,972 miles
  • Czechia: 2,811 miles
  • South Africa: 2,440 miles
  • DR Congo: 2,270 miles
"Some teams will face tough travel schedules if they advance deep into the tournament," said Daniel Mader, Content Producer for The Sporting News. "It's a factor that might influence performance as much as anything else."
