Barcelona on Alert as Inzaghi Opens Door for Cancelo Exit

Simone Inzaghi only needed one line to send a jolt through Barcelona’s transfer department. Speaking on the eve of Al-Hilal’s league opener against Al-Faisaly, the Italian coach made it clear: Joao Cancelo’s future is no longer in his hands, but in those of the club’s hierarchy.

Then came the second message, even louder than his words. Cancelo was not in the squad.

For Barcelona, that omission sounded like opportunity. For Cancelo, it underlined what many inside the game already suspected: he has no place in Inzaghi’s plans at the start of this season.

Inzaghi opens the door

Talking to Spanish newspaper Sport, Inzaghi laid out the situation with the Portuguese full-back in blunt terms. “Cancelo continues to train regularly with the team, but his future and whether he stays or not is a matter for the board of directors,” he said.

No tactical debate. No discussion about fit or form. Just a straight handover to the Al-Hilal board. Once that sentence landed in Barcelona, it was read as a green light.

Inside the Camp Nou offices, it sharpened the focus on a deal they have been circling for weeks. Hansi Flick has marked Cancelo as a priority signing to strengthen both full-back positions, valuing his capacity to operate on the right and the left with the same aggression and quality on the ball.

Cancelo’s message to Barça

The defender has done little to disguise where he wants to be. On Friday, he used Instagram to send another nudge in Barcelona’s direction, posting a fresh image tied to the club on his Stories. It was his second public hint since last season ended, another clear sign that his mind is already back at Camp Nou.

He is waiting. Flick is waiting. Barcelona’s dressing room knows exactly what his arrival would bring in terms of depth and experience in wide defensive areas.

But the deal has hit a wall. A very specific, very expensive wall.

From 10 to 15 million

The two clubs had moved close to an agreement around 10 million euros, a figure that seemed to suit Barcelona’s fragile finances and Al-Hilal’s desire not to lose a key asset on the cheap.

Then the price changed.

Saudi sources revealed that Al-Hilal have raised their demands to 15 million euros to let the 32-year-old leave. That jump has chilled negotiations. Barcelona are refusing to pay what they see as an inflated fee, wary of stretching a budget already under pressure, while Al-Hilal are standing firm and scanning the market for a replacement before even thinking about softening their stance.

The pressure finally lands on one man

Now the spotlight turns to Deco. The sporting director has to find a way through a deal that has moved from straightforward to delicate in a matter of days.

He needs a formula: a structure that lowers the immediate cost, satisfies Al-Hilal’s demands, and still delivers the full-back Flick is pushing for. Loan with an obligation? Variables based on appearances and trophies? A staggered payment plan?

Barcelona know what Cancelo wants. They know what Flick wants. Al-Hilal know exactly what they want too.

Between those three forces, Deco has to decide whether this stand-off ends with Cancelo back in a Barcelona shirt, or with the club looking elsewhere for the full-back that could shape Flick’s first season on the Camp Nou touchline.
