Unai Emery Faces Midfield Challenge as Leon Goretzka Sidelined Ahead of Aston Villa's Champions League Clash

Unai Emery Grapples with Goretzka Injury Ahead of Club Brugge Match

Unai Emery, manager of Aston Villa, is confronting a tough selection dilemma as the team prepares for a crucial Champions League match against Club Brugge. The Premier League club must contend without midfielder Leon Goretzka, who remains sidelined due to injury, leaving a notable gap in Villa's midfield.

Goretzka's Absence a Major Setback

The German international, who joined Villa on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, was anticipated to bring experience and stability to a midfield reshaped over the summer. Unfortunately, his body has struggled to adjust to the increased training demands after a period of limited playing time in Germany, pushing back his debut. This has left Emery searching for alternatives amid a challenging start to the domestic season.

"Goretzka’s issue is a bit frustrating, but we have players who can replace him. When he’s coming back, hopefully he can get the consistency in training and playing and we can add his experience. He is a player who will help us in different competitions with the level he has," Emery said during a press conference.

Goretzka Shares Update with Fans

On social media, Goretzka explained the delay in his debut to fans eager to see him play. He revealed that his body reacted to the intensified workload after his recent period away from competitive football. The setback is expected to last at least a month, meaning he won’t appear again until after the international break.

"Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch. It’s frustrating, but I need this short break now to come back at full strength. I’ll use the coming days, including the international break, to recover fully," Goretzka posted.

Champions League Offers New Opportunity

Aston Villa have struggled to find form in the 2026-27 Premier League campaign, starting with one draw and two losses from their first three matches. This contrasts sharply with the optimism following last season’s success.

"I think the last match…we showed, collectively, some improvements. We started with the Premier League as our objective at the end of the season, and we are progressing. Still not enough, because we are not getting good results, but tomorrow is a new test, and a new test in Europe," Emery reflected.

He added, "To be here in Champions League is something fantastic, and how we achieved it we can continue feeling proud of how we did, through finishing fourth in the league and winning in Europe. But it’s a new chapter, and completely different. When we started the project here, the vision we had was in our highest expectation, even maybe was not to be in Europe four years in a row, with two in the Champions League."

Upcoming Test in Belgium

Villa’s trip to Belgium presents its own challenges. They aim to move past memories of a 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge in their last Champions League encounter in 2024. Emery’s squad will miss both Goretzka and the injured Johan Manzambi but gains strength with Joao Gomes returning from suspension.

The Belgian side arrives in strong form, boasting four wins from their opening five league matches this season.
