WBC Mandates William Zepeda vs Jadier Herrera for Lightweight Title Unification

WBC Directs Lightweight Title Clash Between William Zepeda and Jadier Herrera

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has taken an unusual step by ordering a unification fight between reigning lightweight champion William Zepeda and interim titleholder Jadier Herrera. The two fighters have until October 20th to finalize an agreement for the bout.

With top contender Shakur Stevenson moving up in weight class to challenge for the super lightweight championship against Teofimo Lopez, the interim lightweight title became vacant. Herrera, boasting an undefeated record of 18-0 with 16 knockouts, earned the interim belt after decisively defeating veteran Ricardo Nunez.

The WBC later stripped Stevenson of his lightweight title due to unpaid sanctioning fees. Instead of simply promoting Herrera or arranging a fight for the vacant title, the organization allowed Zepeda, who holds a record of 34-1 with 27 knockouts, to claim the full championship by besting Lamont Roach Jr. this past August.

Zepeda poses a tough challenge within the lightweight division following Stevenson's departure. Although the 24-year-old's most notable win came against a less formidable opponent after suffering a disqualification loss to Jon Fernandez, he is eager for this fight. Promoter Frank Warren is also pushing for the showdown, making it likely that Herrera will get his shot unless Zepeda pursues a unification with Abdullah Mason or opts to vacate the title.
