Anthony Joshua Targets Murat Gassiev After Tyson Fury Bout

Anthony Joshua has made it clear who he plans to face next if he manages to overcome Tyson Fury in their upcoming December showdown. This match, set for December 11th at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, is considered one of the biggest events in British boxing history.

For years, efforts to bring these two fighters together inside the ring have fallen short. Now, they appear destined to settle their rivalry in Wales.

Potential World Title on the Line

Besides pride, this fight might also involve the WBA's 'Super' heavyweight championship. It could mark the first occasion that this title is contested by two fighters who currently do not hold any world title between them.

One boxer who might be less thrilled about this development is Russian heavyweight Murat Gassiev. Gassiev holds the WBA 'Regular' heavyweight championship, a title he gained after Oleksandr Usyk vacated his belts in June. Gassiev successfully defended his crown against Peter Kadiru in July.

The WBA hasn't officially confirmed whether the Fury vs Joshua fight will be for the 'Super' title yet, but Gassiev's camp has lodged a formal complaint. They demand the WBA deny reports suggesting the title will be at stake and insist that Gassiev's status as the sole world heavyweight champion be respected.

"If anyone should be fighting for the WBA Super heavyweight title, it is Murat Gassiev, the reigning champion, not two boxers who currently hold no world title between them," stated John Wirt, Gassiev’s co-promoter and legal adviser.

Joshua's Clear Intentions

At the press conference launching the Fury fight, Joshua was asked who he would face next if victorious. His response was brief but definite: "Murat Gassiev."

Under WBA regulations, the 'Super' champion must defend the title against the 'Regular' champion. Many fighters choose to vacate titles to avoid mandatory fights they find unappealing.

Given Gassiev’s lower market profile compared to Fury or Joshua, it’s understandable if either fighter hesitates about this matchup. Still, Joshua appears committed to fulfilling his obligations should he win in December, a stance likely welcomed by Team Gassiev.
