Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will feel a little edgy on Saturday evening. One game into the Premier League season and Roberto De Zerbi is already demanding a response.

Spurs were taken apart 3-0 on the opening day, a bruising defeat that cut straight through the optimism around an expensively rebuilt squad. The Italian has “plenty to address” and he knows it.

A 5-1 EFL Cup win in midweek eased some of the tension. Goals flowed, confidence flickered back into view, and the new faces finally offered a glimpse of what this team might become. But that came against far weaker opposition. Newcastle United are a different examination entirely.

Spurs’ home comfort vs a brutal head-to-head record

If De Zerbi needs something to cling to, history at this ground gives him a hand. Tottenham have won their opening home league game in each of the last five seasons. Fourteen goals scored, just one conceded across those fixtures. This stadium has usually roared them into the campaign.

That run now meets a side that has made a habit of spoiling Spurs’ plans.

Newcastle have beaten Tottenham in six of their last eight Premier League meetings. They have also won on three of their last four visits to this very stadium. When Spurs see black-and-white shirts, clean sheets tend to vanish: they have failed to shut out the Magpies in any of their last 14 encounters.

That is the backdrop to De Zerbi’s search for improvement after the collapse at Brentford, where Spurs allowed 26 shots and 3.87 expected goals. Those numbers are not just bad; they are alarming for a coach who builds his reputation on structure and control.

New faces, fresh hope

The midweek cup tie at least brought life to the forward line. Savio, making his debut, scored and assisted, immediately justifying the “incredible” tag De Zerbi has already pinned on him. His direct running and sharp decision-making changed the tempo of Spurs’ attack.

Omar Marmoush is the next to step into the spotlight. The new arrival could make his first appearance for the club in the league, with his manager impressed by what he has seen in training. Mohammed Kudus may also rejoin the matchday squad after a lengthy absence, offering another high-calibre option from the bench.

Not all the news is positive. James Maddison is a doubt with a shoulder problem, though De Zerbi insists the issue is not serious. Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert remain out, and Pape Sarr’s involvement is clouded by transfer uncertainty.

Defensively, at least, there is some clarity. Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro are expected to start, with Destiny Udogie and Jan Paul van Hecke likely completing the back four in front of Guglielmo Vicario.

Newcastle’s new era shows early bite

On the other side, Newcastle arrive with a sense of frustration mixed with encouragement. Matthias Jaissle’s first Premier League game in charge ended in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool, a contest his team led twice before conceding a 99th-minute penalty.

The late equaliser stung, but the performance did not. Anthony Elanga found the net, while Yoane Wissa impressed in a deeper attacking role, giving Jaissle early evidence that his ideas can translate quickly in England.

Newcastle’s confidence at this ground is long-standing. They have won 13 Premier League away games against Tottenham, more than against any other opponent. When they travel to North London, they tend to travel well.

Goals almost guaranteed

If recent history is any guide, this fixture should not drift into stalemate. It is the most played match-up in Premier League history without a goalless draw: at least one goal has been scored in all 62 meetings. These two simply do not do 0-0.

For De Zerbi, that is both a promise and a warning. His side will almost certainly create chances, especially with Savio and possibly Marmoush adding a new edge to the front line. But against a Newcastle team that relishes this away day and has punished Spurs repeatedly, defensive lapses could again define the story.
