Tottenham's Ambitious Pursuit of Cody Gakpo
Tottenham are lining up one of the window’s most audacious attacking reshuffles – and Cody Gakpo sits right at the heart of it.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have already torn into the market with intent. More than £230m has gone on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, heavy investment through the spine. Smart business followed on frees with Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson shoring up key areas. Goalkeeper, defence, midfield: boxes ticked.
Now comes the fun part. The front line.
Savinho set for the right, spotlight on the left
Tottenham’s first major swing out wide is aimed at Manchester City’s Savinho. The Brazilian has told City he wants out and has given Spurs the green light. Negotiations between the clubs have been ongoing, with a package of around £60m understood to be enough to get it done.
That move would lock down the right flank. The left, and the central striking role behind it, is where the story turns.
Spurs had been primed to launch an opening bid for Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi. They were, according to TEAMtalk, less than 24 hours away from making their move when disaster struck: a fractured metatarsal. Surgery followed, and with the 18-year-old now expected to be sidelined for three to four months, any summer transfer is off the table.
The gap in Postecoglou’s plan didn’t stay empty for long.
Gakpo emerges as leading contender
Cody Gakpo, 27, has moved sharply into focus. Fabrizio Romano recently flagged the situation, urging fans to “keep an eye on Tottenham Hotspur and Cody Gakpo in the next weeks,” noting Spurs “really like the player.”
That interest has now hardened. Journalist Paul O’Keefe reported on Saturday that Gakpo is “now a leading contender as Tottenham look to add to their attacking options,” with Spurs described as front and centre in the chase.
The fit is obvious. Gakpo operates primarily from the left wing but has shown at Liverpool that he can step inside and lead the line. It’s the same positional versatility Tottenham hoped to secure with Kroupi: a wide forward who can morph into a central striker when required, giving Postecoglou tactical freedom without constant changes in personnel.
Liverpool name their price
Versatility comes at a cost. Liverpool are not inclined to sell cheaply.
Anfield Watch report that the club have set a valuation of £72m (€85m) for Gakpo. That figure has not been plucked from thin air; Liverpool are said to have used Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona as the benchmark for their stance.
“Anfield Watch understands Liverpool have priced Cody Gakpo at £72m (€85m),” they wrote, adding that Gordon’s transfer formed the base of that valuation.
For Spurs, that means any attempt to pair Savinho on the right with Gakpo on the left would push this attacking rebuild towards blockbuster territory. With roughly £60m earmarked for Savinho and £72m needed for Gakpo, Tottenham would be staring at a double-wing outlay north of £130m.
A statement window in the making
Tottenham have already reshaped their squad this summer. They have spent big, moved quickly and targeted players who fit Postecoglou’s aggressive, front-foot style. A double swoop for Savinho and Gakpo would elevate that work into something else entirely – a full-scale reimagining of their attacking identity.
Liverpool, for their part, have made their position clear. The price is set. The benchmark is public.
Now the question is simple: will Tottenham turn serious admiration for Cody Gakpo into a bid that matches their ambition?
