Tijjani Reijnders' Father Reveals Why Midfielder Left Manchester City for Al Qadsiah
Tijjani Reijnders' Surprising Move to Saudi Arabia Explained by His Father
Tijjani Reijnders recently made headlines with his transfer from Manchester City to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah. The Dutch international, now 28, left many puzzled, especially since he was entering his peak years. His father and advisor, Martin Reijnders, opened up about the mix of factors behind this decision.
Financial Demands and Sporting Ambitions
Martin Reijnders admitted that the lucrative contract, reportedly worth around 100 million euros over four years, grabbed attention. Still, he insists there is more beneath the surface. The primary challenge was Europe's high transfer fee demands for Tijjani, which only Al Qadsiah could meet.
European Interest Blocked by Valuation
Clubs like Juventus, Newcastle United, and Atletico Madrid showed real interest after Reijnders became dissatisfied with his role under new City manager Enzo Maresca. But the deal stalled because Manchester City set a price tag no European club was ready to pay. Martin explained, "Tijjani simply couldn’t go just anywhere," pointing to City's steep valuation as the main obstacle.
Sporting Project and Playing Time Influenced Choice
Besides the financial muscle, Al Qadsiah’s sporting ambitions attracted Tijjani. The club recently qualified for the Asian Champions League and has been signing notable international players to establish itself in Asian football. Martin emphasized that money was decisive only when weighing two sporting options: staying on the bench at City or playing regularly in a system designed for him.
"Money only became a factor when two sporting choices remained," Martin said, highlighting the importance of regular competitive minutes.
Looking Ahead After a Successful England Stint
Reijnders leaves Manchester City after contributing to their 2025–26 FA Cup and Carabao Cup victories. Having represented the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup, he now turns his focus to the Middle East. His goal with Al Qadsiah is to become a key player in their ambitious continental campaign, marking a new chapter both challenging and financially rewarding.
